    Harzuki (warning) not for purists

Well much thanks to Mike H whose own project inspired the mods on this bike. I had hung a pic of his bike on the wall as a model for this adventure.

I pulled a very stock 78 750gs out of a friends grandfathers barn back in Nov.
The bike had 18k on it and looked decent but didn't run. The fellow assured me that it had when parked 8 yrs ago so I figured some minor tune-up work would fire the thing up. I got it home and replaced the plugs and she started almost immediately.

Funny thing about the barn, When we were looking over the bike , I noticed some mouse nestings in the air box. Further inspection showed more mouse nestings in the rear cowl hatch. When my son opened the hatch the current resident jumped out onto the seat and down to the floor. Funny stuff. Fortunately the wires were intact so he apparently didn't do much chewing. Since he couldn't make the rent, I evicted him and took possession.

The problem I had with the mods is that a 80's x type tank will not bolt up on a 78. The stock tank is a little too boxy and I wanted that tapered look.
Since the front tank ears on the x tank are spaced a little wider than the 78, I fabbed a bracket with great ( if I do say so )results. Maybe I'll get a patent. I've submitted a sketch of the bracket in case anyone else has been watching too much OCC. Anyway, the rear tabs also needed work as the x tank mounts vertically with 2 tabs and the 78 mounts horizontally with one tab. I cut the two tabs off the x and center mounted a small piece of angle with a drilled hole to match the 78 mounting thread. Brazing or welding this bracket would be preferrable but I then drilled two small holes in the tank lip and screwed the angle on. This plus a little epoxy should do the trick.
The results were good but the back end of the tank does sit up a bit. I'll have to contour the seat to match. I don't think you can notice in the pics.

The dyna fender (as advertised) fits almost pefectly on the back end. The width is almost exact although i did cut the front portion towards the seat to help center the fender to the wheel. I noticed on E-bay that there are also alot of soft-tail bobbed fenders available but that they have a notch cut into the front of the rear fender to accomodate the suspension. These may have also worked but I didnt try so i can't be sure.

As of this pic, i hadn't cut the frame yet although that has already been done. To further center the fender , I needed to mount it lower and the frame rails protruded too far back and up to do this. Amazing how soft that metal is when matched up with a hacksaw and grinder.
I've cut about 2 inches off the rail and removed all the extra tabs. Mounting the fender is now done with bolts straight thru the rail.

Anyway, mike, you may have started something. I'll take a cruiser over a streetfighter anyday. I'm getting too old to want to go any faster and all that bending over just isn't good for my back.

bracket pics will have to come later as they will only allow 1 upload at a time

paint comes later, maybe next weekend but I'll still likely go gloss black. The bullet turn signals are in as is the catseye tail light. E-bay has also got some really slick decals and that should about wrap it up. Maybe a 2-1 turn-out exhaust from mac but then that would put me over budget.

I'll have to take a look at the 750t , I'm always looking for ideas.

Once the weather breaks I'll likely start in with the perfomance end of things. I've still got brakes to drain, forks to drain, oil to change, points to time etc...
It has been sitting for 8 yrs.

this guy below has info on almost all makes and models with factory specs

I'll see if I can find the t model.

The bracket sketch is thumbnailed, real easy if you have a bridgeport and a bandsaw.

Very very nice. I am thinking along the same lines for mine. Can you post some more pics please?

                    Nice flow to it.
Are you leaving the seat brown? I like to offset color.

                    Nice job.

                      Hmmm

The color you see is called foam yellow(ish-tan). The first thing (almost) I did to the bike was to try and contour the original seat. Mine was a flat bench style seat and I was concerned that if I accelerated too fast, I'd go slidding towards the taillights. Some of the stockers already have the contour built in and that was the effect I was going for.

Well one thing led to another etc... and the project had started...

the seat you see in the pics is just a piece of the cutoff foam from that original mod. I put it on for effect but i think you might be right as to the contrast.

My wife did bring home a size 4 leather skirt that i was going to use for a skin (she wouldn't fit in it ) and while the leather is super soft, it's also black.

The bike does need a little something though.

see thumb for possible tank decal.

Personally I would trim and paint the front fender and ditch the huge front turn signals in favor of something smaller, tucked closer to the headlamp.
Fork gaiters would help out too.

Well thanks for the kind words

Apparently I'm going to have to open a photo album so I can post more pics rather than thumbnailing one at a time.

anyway, the thumb shows the fabbed taillight bracket, the cut front fender with etching primer , the aftermarket lights and most importantly the FCRB mod to the rear fender along with the cut work so that the fender will center properly. (It doesn't seem to show that much of the cut work but I'll need another pic) Now lets put it all together for a final mock-up before paint.

So It seems in addition to a photo album, I've got to learn to highlight the quotes instead of the post reading "quote"

The final mock-up, a zoom would highlight how really bad the welds look along the rail, I may have to do something about that.......The pic also doesn't do justice to the rail end plugs but thats also another camera angle.

I see, from looking at yours, that the depth of the fender takes up a lot of the space over the wheel. I may not have to run shorter shocks to get it to look the way I want. This is a good thing, since the bike handles a lot better with the longer shocks on it. The only gripe I have had with the shorter shocks I bought has been the wires that were rubbed bare under the rear fender. If I do decide to go with the shorter shocks I will have to see what I can do about getting stiffer springs for them. The shorter shocks increase the angle of the lever that is the swing arm, effectively reducing the spring rate. Either that, or I will have to cut and remount the shock mounts.
