HANDLE BAR CHANGE - Questions ????

Ok - since I am a constant fidler I have been thinking about changing the handle bars.

    A couple questions please -

I found these on EBAY -
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB..._promot_widget

Does anyone know if they will fit ?

Will this help with handling ? (Put me in better riding position, etc . ??? )

    How Hard is it ?
I have changed bars on a Jetski- but I am not sure about the throttle and the way the grips fit/slide on the throttle.

What do you do to get the grips off the throtle?

Is it hard to get a new one on ?

    They WILL fit.

It will "aggressify" your position dramaticly,.

    Nothin to it.

Use hairspray to lube on the new grips and it will set them solid.

Cut off your left grip. pull and twist the right.

It'll look dead sexy. Buy them, take a pic and post it! I wanna see!

The 7/8" bar will fit your bar clamps. The question is, will the equipment fit the new length? Wiring harnesses should have enough slack. Throttle cables & clutch cable may need adjustment. Brake line may be a challenge. I replaced the brake line on my GS1000, then later when I changed bars I needed a longer brake line.

Looks like the new bar will put you in a downward lean rather than a sit-tall position. It's really gonna depend on how you like 'em. It might help handling, if your center of gravity is lower.

Cables will be fun to adjust. Old grips need to be cut off. Everything else is a bolt on. Be careful not to scratch the tank, or spill brake fluid!

Cut 'em off with a razor knife.

I used grip glue. It was a b*tch. Some folks around here recommend your wife's hairspray. Goes on wet, holds great when it's dry. You better work fast, no matter what you use.

I wanna see, too! I've been playing around with ideas on my project. I bought some clip-ons from an 1150, but I haven't tried to make them work yet. I've seen those bars on ebay before and liked them.

I thought about some squarer bars, to bring the wrists straight. Be nice to know if a set fitted without cable & brake line changes...

I had drag bars on my 1100E, not on the 1000S.
hated the drag bars, puched me into the tank/seat area.
Johnson and the twins were seldom happy

On the 1000S, I have superbike bars and they are wonderful.

the 1100E and 1000 family have different ergonomics, so.........it may work

After seeing a bunch of pics with the bars and other bars - I think I am leaning towards super bike bars.

              Anyone have a link to some for a 78 GS1000 ?

Thanks - I am still looking for a good set to put on the bike.. :-D

Use rubber cemet to slide grips on. It is easier and won't slide when wet. Grip-glue is rubber cement except you pay 120x for a small tube. Just go to your arts/crafts section in the grocery/variety store.

I have drag bars on my GS1100E. I was thinking of going to clubman bars BUT it is already pretty extreme riding position. Clubmans would be way too extreme and I am in good shape.
Keep in mind I have Katana's and Ducatis so when I say extreme, I mean it.

                see pics! lokks tough!

The bars that came on my bike made me feel cramped...got a set off of KZ650 that brought my arms out and was more comfortable on the wrists.

Here's my '79 550e with black drag bars. It now has the seat cut down flat and a black bar-end mirror.

I have known guys to lose a handgrip whilst riding because they put them on with hairspray. Hairspray is water soluble, so if you get a long patch of wet weather (and the moisture gets in) it can be VERY dangerous.

As fastkatanaboy suggested, always use rubber cement (also known as contact grip or contact cement). Just lube up the inside of the grip with it and slide it on really quickly. You've got about 10 to 15 seconds - so work fast!

Here they are on my '78 750. I like the riding position but my wrists are a little straight so my throttle side gets a little sore. I've only got 50 mi. or so since my rebuild so it might be the throttle cable needs lubed too.

After using a razor to slice the old foam grips off, I slipped the new grips on with hairspray, really a lot easier than it sounds. Let them set for a day or two before you even think about giving them a twist. Have not heard the cement idea before.
