Forks Reflector Holder Bracket Removal
can the grooved reflector bracket be removed from the forks on my '83 GS450E? the 'chrome' paint is pretty ugly. it looks like the plastic is sandwiched in there, with rubber gaskets on either side. i can arrange to keep the wires and cables in check without this bracket, i think...

Carefully unbolt the top of the triple tree and lift it off the forks. Slide the headlight ears off and then slide the brace cover off.

Here's an exploded view of the steering stem:
klhilberg gave you some good advice... I urge you NOT to break that cosmetic cover when you remove it; those things were discontinued YEARS ago, and you might be able to pick up a few bucks by selling it on fleaBay, or, you could sell it (or donate it) to someone who posts in these forums. I painted the one on my (black) '83 450E black... of course, I first had to sand it, after repairing some gouges put there by some previous owner... spot putty took care of the gouges, and I used Dupli-Color black vinyl dye to black it out... I was worried that the vinyl dye would ruin the plastic, but that was in the days before Krylon Fusion was available... anyway, it survived the application of vinyl dye, and I reinstalled it (as much as I disliked it) because I'd promised to sell the 450 to a friend. I'd taught him how to ride on it (though I insisted that he ALSO had to take the MSF BRC), and he wanted to buy it from me, for sentimental reasons...
OK, that's enough reminiscing; I have no doubt that most of those covers hit the trash over the years, so you might find someone willing to throw you ten bucks for that one...
