Like I said, use the factory mounts and run a bar through them, then bolt to that.

I copied the picture and blew it up. You're right, that's how they did it. There's a bar clamped into the stock triple tree with the risers clamped onto the bar.

I bought risers from GenMar for my L. I replaced the stock bars with something more "normal" but wanted them a little higher and further back.

Old school risers

Those risers are clamped around a short section of the stock bars at the bottom. and the new bar secured to the top. I have a pair machined from thick aluminum. Almost identical to the ones in the photo except they aren't polished. Think their either 4 or 6 inch. Removed them from a '69 commando 750 I sold a while back. PM me if your interested I'll dig them out.

just buy some Harley risers and shim them...
