    Duplicate Factory Pinstrips?

Any suggestions for replicating factory pinstrips like those shown below? I’ve already checked reproductiondecales.com and they don’t have this style. I know that pinstripe tape is available but can it be curved like this? I've already repaired the dents and painted the tank black. Want to add the pinstripes before hitting the tank with more clear.

    Thanks in advance.

On those chopper programs they always do them by hand.... reckon I would mask & spray them myself. They seem to print their masks on heavy paper & then apply, I guess you could print the rads on the PC & then line tape up to it or whatever.

On my GS1000e I sent my tank and tail piece to reproductiondecales.com and they copied the originals decals on the parts and now if you look at there website decals for a 79 1000e they are available because of me but you already painted your tank. You could do that layout with stripe tape which will make very tight turns because the tape is very thin and stretches, I have done it with 3m tape. Hammerhead did some killer stripes on his 850. Careful masking with tape, I believe. Shoot him a PM maybe.

Tape stripes are seriously easy to do, with only minimal practice.
Run a couple of lines and curves on the lid of your dryer, and then have at that tank.
It really is as easy as it sounds.

You don't have to paint the whole tank gold, just where you want the stripes to be.

Let's say for simplicity you want two 1/8" gold stripes. Lay out the first stripe with your 1/8" tape over the gold you already put on the tank. Then run two more right next to it. The center run of tape is to get the width right. Pull the center piece of tape, spray your black, and your ready for the clear...The real trick is making the other side match. :-D

In the case if this tank, black was the first color. White was next, then the blue. It was all laid out with 3-M blue 1/4" fine line tape. Part # 06404 if I remember correctly.

You can also pull some fairly tight lines even with wide tape. Again, these were done in 1/4".
Did you paint the bottom tank? Damn good paint job. Looks mirror smooth

I'll give it a try. Nothing much to loose; if they don't turn out right I'll pull them off.

The tank paint turned out great so far. Used PPG DP epoxy primer followed by base coat and urethane 2010 clear. The clear is two part, low VOC stuff. Sprayed out great and flowed out perfectly, without a tendency to run. Hopefully the durability will be good - low VOC stuff scares me. I'm going to sand the tank with 1000 grit before installing the pin stripes and then seal over them afterwards with more clear.

I'll post more photos a little later.

My hats of to you Dan. I'd been watching the site for decals ever since my get-off a couple of years ago. I'd sent them measurements and lots of photos but it was no doubt you sending them your stuff that got the job done. I only needed the tail piece decals by that time and got them last fall. Getting the tail piece finished this winter is on the to do list again.

Call an established sign shop in yer area, not one of the newer all vinyl quickie shops. Ask them for a number of an older striper. Chances are they'll have at least one resource for you. Theres a few old time stripers in each town.

                        For those interested...

Bought some pinstripe tape at the local autoparts joint, two widths, and had at it. Before I started the tank was color sanded using 1500 grit sandpaper to smooth out the orange peel and remove the dirt pimples. The stripe tape layed down nicely although the corners were a bit of a chore for the wider of the two stripes. The hardest part though was getting both sides to match; used electrical tape as a guide. Overall, it turned out okay. Won't pass a 100 point concourse inspection but looks good enough for me (and I'm pretty picky). Hopefully the weather will be good this weekend so I can hit the tank with two more layer of clear to seal down the stripes.

                          My first attempt at stripes

Here is my first try at painting on stripes. And oh yeah, the tank was completely stripped inside and out. I sealed the inside w/POR Tank sealer and the outside w/POR 15 before painting it black and painting on the stripes then clearcoating. Interesting experience.

The stripes look great Nessism. I'm glad you took the time to try.
Be aware though, the tape is a little thicker than the origional decals and may have a ridge when you clear over them.
Be real careful if you wet sand the top coat.
