Yeah that is a bummer. I guess they got a point when they say I don't have time to do it right but I have time to do it twice. But meh I'm liking the whole painting aspect of my project. I bought some little device that holds the spray can like a gun so it makes me feel all professional . And ditto with the antique brass instead of gold. I think it'll look killer... I've just been getting on with my project. I can finally say everything is painted. Well except for the wheels. Those I'll get on tomorrow. But yeah the frame and tank are ready to go and I should start putting it back together this weekend if time permits. I'd post up pics but I lost that damn stupid camera AGAIN . So far the frame, swingarm, and the bottom of the front forks are flat black, the tank is gloss black and the front chrome fender also. I have a harley rear fender that I'm planning on mounting up but until I can think of a good way to mount it thats sitting in the shed. I'm thinking of painting the motor but I'm a bit weary. I don't know how it'll effect the cooling and such. Oh and I jacked some handlebars off of an old mountain bike that was sitting in the shed. They're essential drag bars. I'm gonna put them on tomorrow and see if I like it. Hopefully I'll find that camera and get some pics of for you guys

How are you gonna go about prepping the surface? Cuz scoring every individual fin sounds like a real PITA

ya dont....that engine paint has ceramic base in it...sticks well without scuffing. Just make sure you get all the grease, oil and what not off the motor first, IE clean the living chit out of it.

i did a rattle can job over the spring.duplicolor primer and paint.
i was worried about the clear though as gas will wreck the job.so i ordered a two part clear from a paint company states side

one can did 4 coats on the tank, side covers and chain gaurd.i have spilled gas on the tank a few times with no problems at all.
            it's called spraymax.

looks good neil...mine did before the gas attack...apparently its time for a new gas cap...i may be able to sand it out and clear again...but im actually looking at maybe a different colour scheme so perhaps it for the best...

Neil: How much was the Spraymax clear? Where'd you get it? That's the two-part stuff where you break open the second part with a thingy on the bottom, right?

I did the same thing on mine...cept it didnt spit, but the little bit of clear in the can actually clouded...p!ssed me off cos i had to sand it all off.. live and learn..lol
man where do you keep finding those things??? 550 is a little on the small side for me at this point...had a 76550SS loved it...but that was years and years ago..from there it was a CB750SS and i couldnt go back...750 is where its at for me, maybe someday id like to move up to a nice 78GS1000, that would make an insane cafe...but if i found a nice one id leave it alone.

I rattled mine, and think it turned out nice.....but of course I would think that....cuz I did it! It's all a matter of taste, and durability....mine is holding up fine.....if I get tired of the color, I can change it on the cheap!

yep it has a button on the lid.put the lid on the bottom of the can and press down.you then have 24 hours to apply.
it was $20.00 american plus shipping (which wasnt cheap)so i bought 2 cans.heres the site.
SprayMax now offers a 2 part (2K) Urethane Aerosol Clear Coat. This 2k urethane Clear Coat spray has a much higher U.V. and weather resistance than any standard aerosol clearcoat on the market today.

i find them quite often actually.a guy at work brings the bike trader in religously every thursday,i check KIIJII and craigs list.i could have 20 more 550's in the garage.i just turned one down for $300.00 last week.it was tempting though as it had duel disk brakes already:-D
my first bike was a Yamaha Seca 750.crashed it on the DVP (front tire went flat as a pancake).it was a great bike and i liked the shaft drive.
thing i like about the cb 500 and 550 is that no engine removal is required on a major overhaul.the cb 750 has about an inch of clearance to remove from the frame and thats being generous.
for extra umph i bought that 82 gs 750\\/
