Man that turbo diesel bike is cool I wonder how much you could get one of those small diesel motor for.

TCK If you want I could give you a hand when it comes time to do your knee inserts.

And I might as well throw up a pic of my bike

Well with any luck ill have a couple tanks to practice on soon. and yes id appreciate the help...And we need to get crackin on your bike dood...speaking of...does that INDEED say its an L model?? on the steering head??

All it says on the steering head is that its an E frame from what I've read none of them said that they were L on the steering head. but with the chrome fenders, big seat and small tank all point to it being an L

Dude...bet your bullocks to barndarts thats an E with a modded L tank and seat...it just doesnt look like its set up originally as an L...the seat looks like its sitting too high, and you said the tank bolts horizontally instead of vertically... I wanna see it in person..My B had chrome fenders...Originally...I bet whomever owned it at one time wrecked his L, bought an E frame for the title or had an E and couldnt find a tank and seat or whatever....I wanna see it in person...I might be wrong...but i dunno...something funny goin on there...

BTW...this just explained from tKent...read the bold type...think we know what that part was now??

OK, a bit of basic charging system thoery:

All electrical power in these bike comes from the alternator. An alternator alternates, that is makes Alternating Current, or AC. This current flows back and forth through the wires, reversing directions many times per second, the rate determined by the RPM of the engine. The alternator has a rotor, which rotates, and a stator, which doesn't. On our GSes the rotor is a magnetic wheel on the end of the crank, the stator is the coils of wire attached to the cover. Moving the magnets past the coils induces a current in the coils, makes electricity, something like 90 volts AC. This electricity goes only to the rectifier...

The rectifier makes the alternating current into DC, direct current, which flows one way like power from a battery. This DC is at a voltage much too high for the rest of the bike, and it goes on to the regulator...

The regulator regulates this DC at a desired level to run the bike and charge the battery, around 13.5 - 14 or so volts.
On some automotive alternators these parts are combined on the back of the alternator, on our bikes they are combined into an RR unit mounted somewhere near the battery. Early GSes had a separate rectifier and regulator but on most it's a RR.

The battery doesn't make any power, just stores it up to use later, like the next engine start. It does need to be in good shape for the rest of this stuff to work properly.

This is pretty basic but it sounds like some needed it at this level, I hope this helps someone.

might want to investigate that on your bike...and mine too...mr electronics guy :P

I guess I will. I wonder if any one knows when they changed over or if the actually changed all bikes over at one point. I'll take a look tomorrow on my lunch break and see if I can figure it out.

I was looking in my Clymer manual and it show a regulator and rectifier as seprate parts for the 77 and 78 then on the 79 it only shows a rectifier but once you get to 80 and on it show a rectifier with regulator.

Just found out the same info...so that rectifier isnt going to work for you without the regulator...

The way it says it in the clymers manual it look like there one unit so I don't know I might just build the one I got plans for so I don't have to mess with it any more.

Sweet...well if you're not going to use that one can i have it back?? LOL i may just change out mine cos its tiny and the regulator looks decrepit...hate to be an indian giver

I'm not sure yet but if I don't use it you can have it back. Or depending on the price of the parts I might be able to build you one so you don't have to deal with a questionable R/R ether.

Even better idea....Let me know. Id gladly pay not to have to worry about that...figure it out and you could prolly make a killing on here selling them too...everyone is always dumping theirs for a Honda R/R
