smell
mine were stinky for about a week after i put it on, and then every time i'm ridin in the rain it comes back. i dont think i ever smelled like it, but i dont go around smellin myself either.

just got the new solo chopper seat today in the mail. replaced the headlight with a small 5" light. alot more to come. pics this weekend

Sorry for chiming in late here, but you guys are missing a big part. They sell a header-wrap spray / coating that seals water out of the material.
Thermo Tec 12001 - Thermo-Tec Hi-Heat Coating:
Specially formulated to protect exhaust insulating wrap. Withstands temperatures up to 2000°F and not only improves header wrap appearance, but extends its life!
The beauty of this is it also paints the exhaust wrap a black'ish gray color. The white just looks goofy in my opinion, so this fixed it nicely.
Can't even tell it's there!
Last, I used the high-temp metal zip ties to hold the wrap in place. It never loosened, never moved.

I have about 30-40 feet of 1" exhaust wrap leftover from this project. I used just a smidge over one roll of 50 feet, and had the to save. Someone here could use it to finish their project...it's gray in color. I'll let it go for $10 and shipping.

Hey Adam, yeah i had seen that spray, havent used it but it does look as if it comes in handy. How much did it run you? And where did you find the metal zip ties, ive looked everywhere parts wise localy and no one seems to carry them (or know if they carry them)

My header wrap is starting to fray. Honestly tho with all the polished work on my GK the frayed exhaust just looks like a badass. Glad I did it and will do it on another bike but it does stink. Especially when the carbs leak down on it and the wrap gets soaked in has before you ride haha.

I'm surprise that so many of you are using header wraps. Do your engines run hotter as a result of this?
I wrapped a set of headers on a mazda rotary engine I used to rally. I found that the engine ran a lot hotter( dangerously so) when I was fanging it out, on longer special stages. I had to remove the wrap to avoid cooking the engine. At moderate revs the engine performed well!! It's amazing how much engine heat dissapation occurs through exhaust radiation!
If the exhaust wraps work so well, why aren't all the factory racers running wrapped exhausts? Some may do, I'm not sure, just a thought!!:) The road to hell is paved with good intentions......................................

My guess is that it isn't sanctioned by the rules. That or they just get their exhuasts coated with a ceramic coating, seeing as header wraps destroy the header. Keeping all that heat in turns the metal brittle faster

1. To keep the exhaust gases hot on their way out of the head for extra performance. On a road bike you might not even notice the diff.
2. Hide or protect your exhaust pipe. A cheap option that works well if done right.
3 Looks. A matter of personal choice
As for race bikes they use ceramic coating on the header to insulate and keep the heat in.
On one of my racebikes i tried both wrap and coating. My bike ran hot with the wrap (like your race car) the wrap also caught fire in the end.
I the made a new pipe and had it coated inside and out with a ceramic coating. Which made a diff with the power of the bike it also ran a bit cooler (not much) but the main advatage was the life of the headers.they lasted much much longer than anything else I had on.

I am ordering a new Cycle Works slash pipe for my 850 and will get that ceramic coated. My old pipe is still good, but replacements mightn't be available in the future, hence me buying now!!
Contrary to what some others believe, I rate these pipes, with the correct tuning parameters.:) The road to hell is paved with good intentions......................................
