I am ordering a new Cycle Works slash pipe for my 850 and will get that ceramic coated. My old pipe is still good, but replacements mightn't be available in the future, hence me buying now!!
Contrary to what some others believe, I rate these pipes, with the correct tuning parameters.
    No worries mate.
I have had cycle works pipes on most of my roadbikes and had no propblems at all. They are what they are a replacement pipe that sound a bit more "throatie". I had pipes HPC coated in Dorkland some time ago. With great results (cant remember how much now).
Hows the xmas weather going to be upthere? I am heading up that way on the 24 (my parents have not long moved to Hastings from Waipukurau).
You heading to the cemetry circuit on 26th? I am (If I can sneak away!)
    Cheers

Give me a PM. I'm heading to Taupo for Xmas. I'd like to catch up if possible, while you're up this way. Could be tempted to take in the cemetry circuit too!!

Although comments people have said to me over the years lead me to believe its far from a performance pipe, The slash pipe has a great sound and thats really all that matters when it comes to GS's and things like say GSX750's.
I look at it this way....If you picked up 2 or 3 horsepower on a GS850, would you really notice it? I doubt it but if your bike sounds like God when it pulls away from the lights while your mates sportsbike sounds like a sewing machine, you gonna be wearing a big smile :-)

Anything has to be better than stock right?!

And when it comes down to it, even if you got the best 4 into 1 and stuck it on a GSX1100 (or derivative), the gains wont be huge unless you compliment the pipe with several other mods and even then you'd probably make great gains at peak revs and lose some of the Engines awesome midrange which is really the bit that makes them so enjoyable to ride IMHO.

At my age, the exhaust sound doesn't mean Jack sh!t. If the exhaust note was the persuading factor, I'd never have the present system fitted to the 850. With my level of industrial deafness, I can't tell what the exhaust sounds like while riding whith a full face helmet on.

If a 4-1 pipe were to give a 2-3 hp gain over stock pipes, then the saving in weight from running 4-1 as opposed the original 4-2 along with the HP increase would normally be felt by a seasoned rider!
In my case, there is also an increase in capacity and CR, which has seen a significant increase in mid range and some top end torque.
Like you say, it's very much a matter of balancing the mods to ensure that you gain an increase, in that already awesome mid range torque.
HP for HP's sake? I don't think so!
