    Repaint Tips?

Well, back in the day (84-88) I owned a 82 and 83 GS 1100e's. Great bikes and even though I have owned 7 or 8 before and since...I always go back to the 1100e when I think about picking up a new bike.

So....found one locally....repainted with no Suzuki insignias on it....I will have to repaint it because I want it perfect.....and only red will do. Does anyone know what 'Code' or Number the 83 red is? The blood red not the darker one. Any tips or is it just having my local auto guy paint it..apply the stickers then shoot clear on it.......and about stickers....anyone have a source for the 83? I saw the other post with the 82, but it's different....what do other people do?

    Thanks

    Chris

Mind that your stickers wont get eaten by the clear. If they are actual OEM/NOS stickers you should be good, but some repros might not like the clear coat. Check FlyNCycle. I do believe i saw a bunch of NOS decals on their site.

Hmmmmm, I just browsed around flyncycle.com and didn't see anything....maybe I need to give them a call tomorrow. So....when the clear doesn't like the sticker...what does it do? bubble up or something?

Melt and or bubble. I would cut a piece of the non sticker part off and shoot it to see what it does. Maybe it wasnt FlyNCycle. I'll have to hunt now cos i was just on a site that had a bunch of that stuff the other night.

Not sure if this is the color your looking for, but you might try here: http://www.reproductiondecals.com/de...tent.html~main .

These are for an 82 GS1100E and I am not sure they are the same decals you are looking for, but their decals can be clear coated over.

            1983 GS1100E Pearl Pure Red R17

I found the color chart for both my bikes at BikeBandit.
I'm pretty sure this is the code.

            Pearl Pure Red #17R

EDIT: Oct 23, 2015: I discovered this color is in fact not that great of a match. This seems better.

Incidently, on a lark I picked up a can of Dupli-Color T152 Bright Red,
which is the exactly the same color red but without the "pearl". It would make for good (if not perfect) touch up paint. Since this color matched so well from the off the shelf Dupli-Color, I supect that with a mix of pearl, it should match very well with a pure red.

I also plan on buying the decals from reproduction decals and am glad to hear they are stable under the clear coat. I had ordered all from BikeBandit, but after seeing resotrationdecals, realized I had not specified the Decals for the Red bike.

One more item, is that Restrorationdecals only lists the 1982 GS1100ED, but the decasl for teh Red bike seem to be identical save for the little suzuki decal on the rear above the tail light. My bike does not have that decal but I see it does exist on Ron's Bike.

Does you bike have the Suzuki decal on the back?

The one on that website for an 82 is slightly different.....on an 83 it is black surrounded by white...but I should give them a call..I would almost bet they print them out from files and it wouldnt take more than a few minutes to make the change....

Dust the clear on lightly, build it up, let it flash, then do a flow coat. Overloading the clear can cause the "reaction."

Good coincidence. I had a post not too long ago looking for the paint code for a Canadian 1984 GS 750E, in red. Due to the 750 not being imported in the US in 1984 there was no info anywhere on paint codes for the model...................at least, not that I could find.
After some back and forth with Suzuki Canada I got an email yesterday advising the paint code should be the 17R you guys have been talking about.
Anyway, while I was waiting to find a code to hopefully be able to get some mixed I did find a very very close match.
                  Plasti-Kote - T-6 Swift Red.
Much like Posplayr with his comment on the Dupli-color match he found, the Plasti-Kote is awfully close to the original. Keeping in mind that the fade on my paint will be different than on yours, the only thing missing is the pearl, or slight sparkle pigment in the paint.
Just another option for your touch up work.

While on the topic of paint fade - anyone try Turtle Wax, Polishing Compound and Scrtach Remover ??? This is great stuff to remove the fade (oxidation??) from the top layer of your paint. Rather inexpensive and worked well for me. I got it at Canadian Tire (for all you canucks out there) but I'm sure Walmarts and automotive outlets will carry it as well.

                    Fooled the camera

This is the Dupli-Color T152 Bright Red painted on a piece of fresh galvanized flashing with no primer (about 3 light coats right from the can).

The picture makes it look like an exact match. It is not quite that close, although the main difference is the pearl.

You can see some of the cracking and perl in the side cover to the left. The flashing is on the right. Anyway it a damn good option for touhup, or even a cheap option for rattle can all up paint job.

On the Turtle Wax, I have been amazed at the quality of some of the new paint and wax/polishing products on the market these days. Things certainly have changed since the 80's when I was last wrenching (cars). My wif's car had a fender that had been repainted and the clear coat was badly oxidized. I started with the Turtlewax rubbing compounds, with a consumer buffer. Ended up using #0000 steel wool by hand with the rubbing compound and then finished with the buffer. Came out pretty well, although I missed a couple of spots (it was getting dark and I was really afraid of going through the paint).

You're after the all black Suzuki emblems? I have these straight for an '83 in red. Opened only for the pictures.

I too took the rattle can option for my gas tank. My problem is the clear coat. It looks great until I spill some gas on it.

What is a good, durable, cheap clear I can get that will protect my paint job from UV, the road, and most importantly, gas spills? I just want to paint it once and be done with it.

                        Thanks!

I'm working with Reproduction Decals on '83 1100 parts. I need someone with a red '83 1100 to help me out, if you have a spare side cover with the sticker on it, please contact me.

No, I believe the Red 83's had the black with a slight white border behind it.........

Right....which I realized recently. The black sticker above is what Suzuki sells you if you order for an 83 GS1100E....all black only.

If someone can help me with the sidecover thing, we can get GS1100E emblems made up.
