Ocean Corrosion
My formerly mirror-like case covers are covered in white powdery stuff! Anyone know what causes this? (The salt in the air I assume) It's under cover but I guess it's not enough. Any tips on what works best to clean it off? Chrome polish or that brasso stuff for silver or... ? Thanks!Tags: None

Chrome polish. Yes it's the salt air. Get to it quick before it gets too bad or you'll have to go to Wet & Dry paper.
Try putting some kind of wax on them to slow it down or you may be able to use a high temp clearcoat.

Thank you much Dannyboy! Yah its hardbreaking. All my new chrome too, handlebars, mirrors etc. Its getting the brown rust. I keep going over it with wd40 to clean it up and keep it protected.

It will protect it, if you do it often enough. My 80 had been cleaned with WD40 or some other sort of spray oil all it's life. I know cause I smelt it & asked TPO. WD40 is just thin & won't stick around long.
I normally run an oily rag over the bars, mirrors etc once in a while but every now & again you just have to get the chrome polish out.... (most polish has some sort of oil base to protect the chrome anyway).

My buddy had this happen to his brand new harly last year and he parked it in the same spot unprotected again this year. Guess since he only rode it twice it wasnt that important to him :P

There is ,or WAS, a product called NEVERDULL that worked AWESOME! I still have some cans of it from when I was in the Navy. If any of you guys with GS 1100 Es have ever had the paint chip on your gas caps you will know they are brass under the black paint. (Or at least something the color of brass.) They polish up VERY nicely with this product. I have been using it on aluminum since the late 70s & LOVE the stuff! Ray.

I have neverdull I think.... Its just like brasso but for silver right? I will try that, and then maybe touch up with the mothers. For the chrome, I think I have that nxt stuff someone on here was promoting. I'll see if that protects the chrome. Thanks!
