    ultimate horn?

We design, make, and sell protective gear and equipment for people who ride motorcycles and scooters. We care about motorcycling, quality, value, and customer service.

i'm thinking on one of these.. i rarely use my horn, but when i do I NEED ATTENTION NOW... anyone try anything like this before?

My only issue with air horns is the compressors can take a second or two to spool up.... A lot can happen in a second at 50mph when someone is about to take you out!

ah good point. i didn't notice any mention of a balist tank to eliminate that, either.

That "Freeway Blaster" looks nice though. I might order 1 pair of those. Guess you'd need the relay.

          loud horn

this is what i use on my gs it was a direct plug in easy to install louder then most cars, I hardley use mine cause my exhaust is so loud I usually just grab the clutch and roll the throttle out and most hear that good luck. http://www.ridegear.com/rg/item/F-41..._pc=GBProducts

OK I just did my research on this the past few weeks. Hopefully this info helps:

That ear horn appears to be identical to the Stebel Nautilus and the Wolo Bad boy. It is an air horn, but the compressor is right next to it (the silver tank) so response time is minimal. However, the sucker is large, and I couldn't find a good, out of the way place to mount it. So I instead went with the Stebel Magnums, just got them hooked up, and they were well worth it. Here's the little writeup I just did on another forum:

I purchased the stebel magnum horns to replace my worn out tiny beepers on the project bike. (As far as I can tell, they are only available for order in the US here: http://www.bikerhiway.com/stebel-mag...ome-p-280.html) This was my first foray into anything electrical that didn't HAVE to be done, so it was a big step for me. Let me tell you, these horns are the BALLS.

They rate 3 db lower than the Stebel Nautilus. My understanding: Since db are logarithmic, 3 db means it's half as loud. But it's still heads and tails better than stock. I haven't compared side by side to my truck, but these things blow, baby!

I picked these mainly because the bike is a cruiser, and being naked there really wasn't a good place to mount the nautilus that I could see. With these however, they were smaller and easier to work with, I mounted them on the front of the frame below the triple tree. According to the cardboard mock up of the nautilus I made, I may have had a "conflict" between the horn and my brake lines under braking, which I definitely didnt want. The magnums consist of one high tone and one low tone, cheaply chromed, trumpet horns, running off voltage only (no air). I'm not sure they make the most appealing fashion statement, but they definitely work where they are. I tried multiple other places but they were either two close to the headers or two close to the valve cover for comfort, since I didn't want melting horns.

Installation kind of sucked because the directions were less than clear, and I'm an electrical noob. It was my first time using a relay: a wire runs straight from the positive battery terminal, through an inline fuse, into the relay. The old horn wires run into the relay as well. When the horn button is pressed, the old horn buttons trigger the relay, opening up the switch and allowing power to the horns, which are grounded to the chassis.

Anyway, I didn't want to **** off the neighbors by honking anymore, so I'm done for now. But I can't wait to try it out some more another day, with a comparison to the stock sv650 horn and my truck's horn.

For What it's worth, those freeway blaster appears to be a good alternative to the Magnums. They're roughly the same size as the magnums, but appear to be more compact.... this might open up an option to mount them in the stock location, even though they should probably be mounted down so water and condensation can drain. I wish I had known about them before, as I may have gone with those instead!

Edit: oh and the magnums come with the required relay. For either magnum or blaster it looks like you'll need to get your own wiring and connectors.

Same thing you do on the infamous "coil Relay Mod". Direct from battery through fuse to one prong, prong to kill switch, prong to coils, prong to ground.

Except in this case you substitute kill switch ang ground with positive and negative horn wires. Same thing. I had just never done it before.

i think it would be "famous", not "infamous" because infamous means bad.

In case anyone is interested, this is how I mounted the Magnums. For those with the PIAA or FIAAMs, theyre supposed to be mounted in a similar fashion to avoid internal corrosion.

Clicking on the image reveals that it is, in fact, a Stebel Nautilus. Wolo's 'Bad Boy' appears to be the same horn, re-badged. I picked up a Nautilus on impulse, spotting a killer deal on ebay, when these hit the market a couple years ago, but have yet to mount it on my bike. I rarely have occasion to use the horn on my bike (or car) in anger, so it hasn't been a priority. I did (foolishly) test it in the garage, with a battery (you do not want to do this!8-[). The aural assault was instantaneous (no 'spooling-up required) and threatened to stop my heart in mid-beat.
If you do buy it, be sure to mount the horn in the specified orientation, with the opening towards the ground....some riders have reported premature failure with other methods of mounting, due to water collecting in the 'trumpet'.

thanks for the heads up! i am strongly considering that, or the flowmax one. as i said on the rare occasion i need a horn it's usually an emergency, like someone has not seen me and is now trying to merge into me, etc. so i definitally want something that will get their attention.

I don't use the horn much, either, and only when I'm safely away from any surprise/spilled latte-induced swerving. Half the time, an unexpected parp from a horn causes a reaction that makes things worse.

But I have to say I reallllllllllly like the idea of a device capable of causing involuntary incontinence in inattentive drivers. :-D

It's probably more legal than a taser or cattle prod, too.

I had Fiamms on my GS 750

set up with a relay; worked great, and sounded like a tractor-trailer. A real attention-getter!
