    Opinino on exhaust rust

I pulled my left side exhaust yesterday (maybe more on that later) and found all this rust on the backside of my exhaust. The other side is in a similar state. Am I too late in finding this? If not, what should be done to preserve my exhaust for the ages? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. But I uh, had pictures in my post. Do you mean pics of the whole bike? I have been negligent on that point, but I'm still cleaning...

Dogma, it looks like light surface rust to me. But Im not sure if it would leave pitting. I would say hit it with some fine FINE steel wool, then see what you can do about polishing it out. May turn out pretty good. Ive had worse turn out better.

Thanks. Good to know it's not too late. I'll be at the grocery store tonight. I'll see if they have 0000 wool. Right...

Wow, steel wool must be friggin' AMAZING. I gotta try that on my driveway!

And tomorrow I'll get to the HW store before they close so can clean my exhaust. Thanks again everyone.

first shot is on the driveway, second is on the front walk.

I believe Coca Cola and steel wool will do you well.
Then hit it with never dull once a wk or so-

Dogma, I may be too late but try this if you want.

#0000 wool, if it isn't cutting the rust enough spray it with wd-40 or sparingly use machine oil (which I use for my customers), and hit it with wool, it cuts better.

Then as a preventative buy some rust converter.

There is a product out there called 'mold release', it is AWESOME stuff that you can apply to high temp areas and keeps the spot where the rust was from corroding again. I can't remember where to buy it, I've had my can for years.

If the area isn't high temp then just use car wax on the spots where the rust was to seal the metal from oxygen.

                          Hope this helps.

Mold release spray is used in the casting of lead alloy bullets. It contains graphite and is designed to prevent rust in bullet molds so bullets will drop free as they are cast. That just happens to be one of my other hobbies.

Here is a link to a place that sells it:

I've been a customer of midwayusa for years and they are a great company. They also have lots of other metal polish/preserving stuff that would be relevant to bikes.

Oh yeah, I forgot about using Coke. But, once a week with NevRdull? It can go ahead and rust. But seriously, I hope there's something better. I can just about handle once a year maintenance.
