    An underbelly muffler?

do you think that a 1982 gs850 could handle a short underbelly muffler? like the ones on a buell 1125r

I really don't think that a GS has that much clearance under the engine to accomodate a muffler like the Buell.

I'm trying to visualize this based on my '80 850. I think it could be done, but you'll lose at least some clearance. Are you planning to fabricate your own?

I'm so tempted to try to fab up something like that, but I think it would be a PITA with so little ground clearance down there. I don't live in a state that's bump free or anything even close to it, so I'd end up messing it up in a hurry and quite possibly ripping it off!

If you could get something like a 3-4" OD muffler, you could probably do it, but it would require obviously a custom header.

I dont think that ground clearance will be a huge issue, my 4-1 on my 750 eliminates all of 3-4 inches of ground clearance compared to a stock system.

Obviously muffler selection will be key.

I'd love to see it done. I'd be second in line If I could see one first.

              ohhhhhhhhhhh.....

I don't think you could do it and still have a functional center stand.

I can tell you from experience (repeatedly) that a GS under suspension load on a spirited ride on a road that is twisty can touch it's collector down on a 4 into 1 header. The muffler that you design better be flat and narrow. Even then unless you add longer shocks to the bike it would probably still kiss tarmac. Also, remember that oil changes would become a PITA.

Good luck! I do like the idea if it could be executed without issues.

What i was thinking was taking a V&H/Kerker/Whatever header, weld the glasspack right where the collector widens and then running it along either the right side of the pan or be fancy and angle it diagonally to exit on the left hand side. Most glasspack mufflers are around the same size as the collector on my V&H...

I would think that a small car muffler (Borla or similar aftermarket) would fit OK, give lots of volume and flow enough to keep the power up. Probably cheaper on fleabay than a bike specific one, too. Paint it flat black and it will look a lot like the Buell system above.

Somewhere I have a pic of a 4 stroke single road racer that put a car muffler inside the fairing belly pan and simply ran a plain tail pipe out the the side. Looked a bit weird with a plain pipe in the place of a normal S-pipe, but it was light, simple and made good power.

i love the idea and the look of the buell's. how it wraps around the wheel to exit is fantastic. there will be no center stand and fabing is a must for the headers (cutting and re welding the orig might be an idea) can't find any specs on that muffler per say to try and make a mock up one to try if you guys find any info let me know. as for the center stand that would be removed to allow more room for the muffler. so thats that idea of making it look different. i'm going to keep looking into it.
keep reply cool to see others peoples idea.

You might be able to use a 2006/2007 GSXR 600/750 slipon to get the look you want, with modification to the muffler's midpipe and possibly to the collector of your header. That's what I have planned for my project...

Here's a pic of my 06 Gixxer 750 with the GP style exhaust:
