    Rusty Pipes

Not mine, I can still sing fine and so can my bike. My 1983 Tempter came to me after sitting outdoor under a tree year round for 5 years. She's needed some TLC, but she's running well. I'm trying to clear up some rusty parts of the bike as a temporary thing to get to winter when I can take it apart when I can't ride it, and paint and get some things rechromed or replaced.

In the meantime, the exhaust pipes are a problem area I'm struggling with. The last stage/muffler is fine, you can part your hair in them now. It's as they come out of the engine, round and under the bike that's caked in rust.

I've tried a Bright Wipe pad (It's purple and looks like the side of a sponge for dishes) that I used to use to polish metal in a metal shop I once worked for, then some 0000 steel wool, then 800, 1000 and 2000 wet/dry sandpaper dry. I still have some rust blotches but they are small.

Is there a faster way to get them to look nice and polished except to do this routine over every bit of the pipes?

A little trick Steve taught me. Try some aluminum foil, wadded up, and scrub the crap out of them. Wont scratch the chrome, but its harder than the rust so it takes it off pretty well. I was pretty amazed by how well it worked.

Eagle One makes a product calle 'Never Dull' that works pretty well on the small spots. Its a stringy fabric with some sort of cleaner in it (not sure of the ingredients) and comes in a small metal tin. You just tear a small piece off and go to rubbin.

Not sure if its recommended or not but I used a combination of the fine steel wool (think 00) and some chrome polish and just scrubbed a lot to get mine cleaned up. Trying to get anywhere with the steel wool dry was so slow but worked pretty decent with the chrome polish.

i always take a wire wheel to my stuff... if your gentle with it it will take the rust right off and not damage the chrome....
