        Bummer about your paint job.

You need to use some sort of two part urethane clear if you want good chemical resistance. Acrylic clear, while better than lacquer, will not hold up to gas as you require.

My rattle can job on the skunk has held up to minor gas spills ok so far. Duplicolor stuff from Kragen.

I always wipe it off pretty quick. No clear, I also try to keep it waxed to add some extra protection.

Just curious, what paint did you use?
Some paints are better than others.
            Not spilling works too.

If you don't bake the paint job, you need to let it cure for a good 5-7 days after the clear coating is done before you try to fill it up. Otherwise, spilled gas may screw up your paint job again.

I'm in the same boat. Fixing up the bike and the tank was off, someone moved it and it had a little bit of gas come out the cap area, ruined the paint instantly on the top of the tank.

I stripped down the tank and fender (found some filler, oh joy!) Going to prep it all up and prime it along with the plastic pieces, then paint it flat black engine paint (rattle can... says it resists gas/oil, etc).

I'll get a real pro job over the winter when I can afford it (about $500).

I've painted my Cafe with Duplicolor rattle can. I've spilled gas on it, oil, wicked paint thinner for automotive paints (name eludes me at the moment), and just last night to top it all off I spilled some brake fluid on it!! Other than a little buffing in spots, it's still holding up perfectly. Now, I wouldn't want to leave any of those chemicals on there for a long period of time, but a little splash doesn't hurt if you're quick to wipe it off.

im going to give up on painting and let somone else do it. i repainted it yellow, very nice but ran out of paint so got some more and waited a week+ to repaint as per instructions on can, so painted tonite and now it looks striped, im hoping after it drys its a solid color, but if not, im done as a rattle can painter. jeez

Engine enamel from the rattle can works, although your colour selection is limited
