converting an 850GL into a G
So I have an 81 GS850GL. Great bike but I like the looks of the G series much better. Has anyone ever interchanged the gas tank and seats on these bikes? Would it be a big process?Tags: None

I have an 850 G and want a GL. We should just swap.
I know the seats are different. Also, I have seen some pictures of the GL tank and it has one bolt on the tank (could be wrong). I have two bolts to the frame. I'm sure the tanks could be swapped. I wish I had the GL seat though...
Does your seat have a hinge?

I have an 81 850G, with one bolt going forward holding the tank on. I think the mounting tabs for the seat might be different too, but some of the more experienced guys here could tell you better. Look at the frame right where the back of the tank goes over it and see if there's a brace going sideways between the 2 frame rails. Thats whrter the tank bolts on an 850G. With a little welding skill and some metal tabs, you could make the seat fit.

I'm not certain about this, but I think I read here a while ago that the forward mounts are also different.Dogma

It's not just the mountings ... the entire frame is different. You two would be much better off simply swapping bikes. This conversion isn't practical, isn't easy, and isn't worth the aggravation.

I will second the motion to swap bikes.
Not only are the frames different from the G to the GL but they are different from '81 to '82, as well. I don't know all the details of what all got changed, but the '79-'81 frames are pretty much the same, the '82 and up frames are different.
By the way, if you notice my sig line, I have an '81G and an '82GL sitting right here for comparison

Handle bars and rear fender are completely different also.
The bars are an easy swap but I don't know about the back fender assembly.

Thanks for all your help! I guess I am stuck with the gl for now. Maybe we should trade. I am in Olympia not to far your stomping grounds.
