No, the GS550E is disc rear. The base 550 was drum. The 550L uses a 17" rear wheel.

That is base model, the E has alloy mag wheels.

Check the OD of the bearings, probably 40mm but if they are 47mm you can install 20mm ID bearings.
But I expect you are better off getting a disc brake wheel, unless you want drum.

'77 GS 750 had spoke wheels and a single disc on front and also a disc on the rear. Making them dual disc was easy and involved getting the right side fork lower, caliper, disc, and hose from a later model.

Getting these parts would be the easiest way to get where you want to be. Lots of '77 GS 750's in poor shape are getting parted out these days...
