The only problem with regard to spokies for you fat tire junkies. 120 rear is the standard on the 750/1000 spoke rear rims. 100 up front. A 130 on the back is really pushing it. It pinches pretty bad, unlike most of the cast wheels, which you can get away with 130s and even 140s on some without TOO much pinch. I am personally a spoke junkie, simply the sexiest wheel ever made IMO, but, unfortunately, unless you can get ahold of something from a modern bike with spoke wheels, and manage to get lucky as far as axle sizes, rotor vs sprocket side, spacing and all that, you're pretty much stuck with skinny minies on the spoked GS rims.Last edited by Guest; 12-11-2008, 12:20 AM.

Originally posted by jed.only View Postim cool with skinny tires, just want dual front rotors and disc rear.
As far as the 750/1000 spoked rims:
Front 19inches
Rear 18inches
The fronts came STOCK with only single sided disc, BUT, the holes are there for a second disc, you just have to usually remove a silly plastic hubcap.
The rear on ALL the 750s (except for the 750T, which was a goofy lil "entry level" bike they put out in the early 80s) and 1000s were disc.
Now, if your bike currently has DRUM brake in back, you will have to do some minor mods. Depending on what model you have (again, sorry) you MIGHT be able to get a 750 swinger to fit back there, in which case, all you will have to do is figure a way to mount your rear master cylinder (tho if you plan on putting some modern rearsets on this project of yours, that too is easily taken care of, and the rear master generally comes built into the brake side set) and you'll likely have to change out the brake pedal (again, if you're doing rearsets, this is all taken care of with some gixxer or busa 'sets) You'll have to figure out some offset issues with the chain and sprockets perhaps, but its not impossible. Just takes some planning, some imagination, some skill, and always, some help from a buddy, and from those here who have done such things.
On the front, you'll need to find a set of forks from a 78/79 750 or 1000 with dual disc. In 78 the 750 got cast wheels part way thru the model year, and THOSE had dual disc, so the forks are obviously set up for that. The 77 750 had only ONE disc, and im not positive on the 78 1000 (first year for that bike) on whether or not it had dual disc, laced rims or single like the first year 750. Again, depending on YOUR bike, could be as simple as a matter of a steering bearing change. Hell, they could bolt right on too...

Simple swap then. Just find a set of 750/1000 rims, and put new wheel bearings in em. The rotors should work just fine.

Another aspect of spoked rims that I am not finding a source of info for, How may spokes?
Most of the Jap bikes are 36 hole rims. Many Euro bikes are 40 spoke.
But I am finding full size rims with 32 holes, What bikes would they be on?

Excellent link to this list, cheers!
They don't list axle size for my '81 GS450, but I have the manual so I can find out easy enough if I want to change to spokes...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

I would expect them to be 15 & 17 as with the other mid size GSs. The 1000 has a 20mm rear.
I see the MX bikes are where the 32 spoke wheels are from.

aw crap. the shaftdrive bikes are 17mm rear. i just bought wheels, the front will fit, the rear is a 17mm rear. can i get an axle and spacers for a 17mm wheel and be okay on my 79 GS1000, or do i need to find another wheel?

If I read your question correctly, you bought a wheel with 17mm bearings that has to go over a 20mm axle?
