Engine side cover hardware
Is it just me or do the #3 Phillips, 6mm, pan head screws used on the 80-81 GS1100E look like sh!t? Makes my eyes hurt.
Anyone got something better? Sources and part numbers please.Tags: None

They do look like sh!t, they have a tendency to seize in their bolt holes, and they strip very easily.
Get a set of stainless allen head bolts from Z1 and an impact driver to get those old crappy screws out.

Way ahead of you on the impact driver idea though.. like 20 years ahead. I learned about what my dad calls "Japanese Torque" back in the late 80's on a XS650 Yammy. Good advice for the new wrenches tho.Last edited by Guest; 12-19-2008, 08:23 PM.

i bought a set like that on ebay for a gs1000. total of 95 pieces forty one bucks shipped. they were from stainlesscycle.com. they are great but the z1 price may be better depending on shipping. may be comparable though since it seems the 1100 has only sixty some pieces.2002 bmw r1150gs 1978 gs1000E skunk les pew 1979 gs1000L dragbike

the kit for my 400 from z-1 ran me about $22 plus shipping. They ship from their supplier and I recieved mine in about five days. Great experience dealing with them and the bolts look t1ts! total of 63 pieces including three Allen keys.

As above but use a release agent such as copperslip lightly on your new screws this prevents them siezing into the case
i believe this problem is called electrolisis (spelling ?) steel into ally along with heat & water welds the two materials together, hence the original screws being a pita to get out

Those Z1 kits being sold are drop shipped from Burk's Motorsports. http://www.westcoastmc.com/store/ They sell direct if you don't want to go through Z1. I've used their kits on a couple of bikes and found it very complete. Good stuff.Ed
