Thanks for the link, i recieved a e-mail from the link i posted that the shipping is actually $15.86 for the 30 cal can i ordered, not $9.00, it's higher but not too bad considering it weighs 19 pounds.

You guys would fit right in on the Moto Guzzi forum. We've been cheap...I mean frugal for decades.

Lots of Guzzis running around with ammo box luggage.

What's that Guzzi wannabe thing with the ammo boxes?

Yeah purists here hate anything that wasn't blessed by Mr. Suzuki, but mr. suzuki didn't make cheap bags for my bike so on with the show!!

Got pics of Guzzi's with the ammo boxes?

Now i can start prepping for paint LOTS "O" GRINDING to do yet.

Finished grinding the welds on the boxes, and rusty areas on the boxes.

Sprayed with DUplicolor green metal etching primer which i have found works excellent on bare steel, (not so good on alluminum or galvanized steel.)

I also stripped the steel bar that holds the rear brake caliper and sprayed that with metal etching primer since it too was rusty.

Still waiting for the second large box to arrive in order to mock up and weld mounts to it, so the frame is bare until i'm done with that.

A little bondo work and surface sanding and paint will be next.

Pics to follow at photobucket once i'm further along on the paint prep.

Got the filler sanded, applyed duplicolor grey fill and sand primer to the mounts, and red glazing putty to fill the scratches, on the three boxes. Still gotta sand the glazing putty, prime, sand and finally apply some color coats. Pics to follow.

Awesome, thanks for the thread and pics, GQROD!

I was looking at this idea a few months back and got stuck thinking about the mounting frame. I appreciate the info, and especially the thoughts on a modular mounting system.

I wonder what would be the difference in material cost and equipment to build this frame out of aluminum?

Anyone fooled with/have pics of a surplus night-vision goggle case as a trunk? Those things looked perfect to me when I was at the surplus store.

Thank you very much! ( by the way the Millenium Falcon RULES! )

If you look at Pannier system they have alluminum boxes and tubing but their mounting system though simple is expensive all around but it's not liked by many who bought it cause it's so flimsy. ( the mounting tube frame ).

I'm a sucker for steel because i don't have the alluminum welding kit for my flux core welder.

To make it out of alluminum is going to cost more, the alluminum at home depot i don't know what type it is if you intend on welding i don't know if it will suffer from metal fatique from the heat, you can get 6061 alluminum annealed so it can work harden, but it's pricey for it's intended purpose and steel tubing 1/16th inch is not really that heavy.

I went with square tubing because i already had it from a previous project so it was free and since my frame is square it made sense, other wise i would have gone with round tubing ( round tubing is a nightmare though if you not sure how to calculate bending radius so save yourself the headaches!!!!! )

It's the large boxes that weigh 19 pounds so one thing i came up with was to use allminum to make the box but use the ammo box lids and seals in order to save on fabrication time etc. But i need the alluminum welding kit for my welder so i went with steel.

There are hundreds of choices when it comes to luggage/cases/trunks i just went with the standard boxes because they were the most durable and cheap.

Plus if i want to customize the box as i will for a small trunk below th rear license plate, i realized there is a lot of space there so i will get a small box then cut it to make a larger box that is not as heavy as the larger box and mount it to the rear.

The good thing about this mounting system is that if i bored with these boxes i can always use the same pin set up and just bolt rather than weld and i can still utilize the same frame so it's a very very flexible system.

My advice to anyone is if it makes sense financially and it's practical then do it, have fun with the projects.

I decided to paint the boxes blue to match the bikes color scheme so look to photobucket for updates in two weeks when i get back.
