Trade it for a "G" 22 liters (5.8 USG) I get around 350km (220 miles)on a tank of gas on my G, I get around 38 - 39 miles to the gal.

It wasn't an "L" model, but a while back someone pointed out a craigslist ad for an 850G that had an extended range tank on it. I think it held something like 10 gallons. It looked kind of weird, but you wouldn't have to fill up very often.

Would it be cost-effective to get one fabricated? About all you can do is ask around and see if there's someone in your area who can give you an estimate for the work. It would be interesting to see if someone could design a larger tank with good lines for the "L" models.

Most are 4.5 gallons although I think there were some made with only 4 gal tanks.

This all depends on how creative you are, you can mount different tanks if they look right.

Or if you can weld you can clean the tank, let it dry out, then custom fabricate sheet steel extensions on both sides to add an extra gallon to a a gallon and a half before it starts to look a little big on the bike.

You can also go with custom tanks that hang on both sides of the bike and use an electric fuel pump to get fuel to the main tank.

I could go on forever on options but google custom choppers and see what they do and go from there.

Yup, I have larger tanks.

This one I built back in 1980, it is extended 4 ½" and narrowed right down to the frame rail. It is just over 5 ¼ Gal, good for 2+ hours on a track.

And here is another one in process,

This tank came off one of my GS750, As you can see it is being raised and narrowed. At this time it is ready for coating the inside and final welding. It should be on the bike this summer.

Both tanks look great! you can't tell they have been made bigger and still keeps the original lines.

My '83 GS1100G has an 5.8 gal stock tank and at 44mpg average will go 255 miles. But I've never pushed it beyond 230 miles after switching to reserve to be safe. Why risk a roadside hassle by passing up gas stations to prove a point.

the 79-81 850Gs and the 82 and up 850Gs and 1100Gs had the largest fuel capacity of any of the GSs, with the "Hans Muth" 1100Es taking a close second, if not a tie, depending on which specs you're looking at. The big G's held 5.8gal, and if I remember right the 1100Es hold right around there as well. Now, before you start cranking out math on how far you can get on one of those tanks, its widely suspected that you'll never get the last .25-.5 gal out of the tank. So keep that in mind.

You can put the petcock on prime for 30-60 seconds to gravity fill the bowls before cranking and it should start right away (if tuned properly).
Just be sure to put it back to it's normal position before starting so you don't forget to do later. You will avoid extended use of the starter and draining the battery, if you follow this procedure when the bikes sits for more than 2-3 weeks, too.
