Seat...Back to Stock, or Recover This One???

    Hi everyone!!

I'm new to owning a GS. I got mine last week.

It came with this "King and Queen" style seat on it. The seat is comfortable, but it needs to be reupholstered. It also has some small amounts of rust on the seat pan, but nothing that's really cause for alarm.

Having it reupholstered isn't going to be really cheap, so I'm wondering what everyone's opinion would be...should I pay to have it upholstered, or should I just shop around until I find a stock seat to put back on the bike??

For what it's worth, the bike is going to be primarily used for longer touring rides and a 50 mile one way daily commute...so comfort IS important...

Here's a picture of the bike, so you can see about what the seat looks like now.

The stock GS850G/1000G had perhaps the best designed seat ever for long range touring comfort. I think if you could find a stock seat for your bike, your buns would thank you every time you rode it for over an hour at a time.

Stock style seat covers are still available from Saddleman and Sargent, so even if you find one with a crappy cover, if the pan and foam are still good, you can make it look like new again.

Do you happen to know if the seat from a 79 GS-1000 would fit on my 1980??

        You need to look for a seat from a '79-'81 GS850G or '80-'81 GS1000G.

I don't believe the seats from the '78-'80 GS1000/GS1000E will fit on your bike. Neither will seats from the '82-'83 GS850G/GS1100G.

Got a stock seat on the way. Will probably need to be recovered, but the pan and foam are supposed to be good.
