Lowering question
Has anyone lowered the back end of their GS? I'm interested in dropping the back about 1in. Any info would be great.Tags: None

Is this a leg length issue or are you going for looks?
If it's related to your legs, then get the seat cut down a bit or try lowering the front end slighty, or both. If it's for looks, I'm not aware of any easy way to lower the tail. Shorter shocks would be the most straight forward.

Progressive has a set of rear shocks that measure a little over an inch under stock. I dont have the number of the part but a quick call will have um setting you up. If youre looking to go more, having the coils and shaft cut will do the same thing for around 65 to 70 bucks with no ill effect. I wouldnt remove more than 3 inches from the overall shock though, youll start to have bottoming out issues. Most shocks tend to only travel 3/4" to 1 1/2" at the most, as long as the overall shock performance is good. The GS doesnt lend itself to lowering blocks (the late 70s to mid 80s GS750s) due to the clevis to eye mounts. Those are the only years Ive dealt with so far in the 750s.

I have a brand new set of rear shocks. Eye to clevis mount in chrome. They measure 11 1/2" from mount to mount which I think is about a 2" drop in the rear. IF you have away to dismantle the shock . one some of them you can cut a lil off the spring but dont cut alot or you will trash them.. 1-3 coils max.
or you can hard bar it i hard bar all my gs's but i drag race them ..
not the best ride on the street lol. but if you use a tlr1000 or gsxr750 swing arm and shock you maybe able to lower it easyer and have a cooler look.
but that's just me i'm sure other have way to lower them too. my way is more of the hardcore rider! shocks are for old men and woman. lol

Lowering just the rear is going to upsett the weight distribution of the bike so for safety's sake i would reccomend lowering both the rear & the front equally
I'm presuming its a leg lenght issue here ok ........ you will probably find that if you lower both ends as suggested by equal amounts the total you will need to lower it to get your feet flat on the ground will be less than you originally thought

Waiting on pictures of said shocks to see if they will go with the image I have for my cafe...
The best way I have found to lower a bike is donuts, beer and a really comfy couch.....

since your bike is a shafty before you get shocks you might want to pull the ones on it now and set the tire to the desired height some how then rotate the wheel to make sure the drive shaft doesn't bind due to a differant drive line angle.78 GS1000 Yosh replica racer project

Well I had a nifty little picture saved showing exactly how to lower the front forks a bit, but I can't find it right now. Just wiped my computer. Here's a link that describes how to cut the damper rod's preload spacer to lower the front end a bit:
