    Nice;

I have lots to do once the weather clears including two sets of GSXR wheels ; one 17" the other 18".

    Joe,
Nice work on the wheels. I used a safety razor to trim excess and it goes pretty quickly. It still takes about 30-45 min to do one side of a wheel.

Of course I clear coated mine as I don't want to do it again.

What kind of clear do you use? I've heard that some turn yellow or wont last.

I used the Por-15 clear and a brushed aluminum look (800 grit) v.s. full polish. It has been about a year and see no evidence of yellowing. Proper prep required.

You need a spray gun, but it would be simple to just clean the machined areas with 800 and then clear cloat spray the whole thing. The clear will improve the apperance of the painted areas assuming it is just dull and not corroded.

Taping is really not that big of a deal, just takes a little time but the results are worth it. So I would recommend painting at least. If you dont have the sprayer, then do like Joe.

Thanks Jim, Do the early GSXR 86-87? wheels fit he older models? I guess it would depend on the width..

I stripped mine with aircraft stripper, polished the aluminum, then masked and painted. I used the Duplicolor Engine Enamel and the primer. They are holding up perfectly.

If mine turn out half as good as any posted here I'll be happy. They are in terrible shape.

                Joe

                Joe,
These are 18" wheels off of a 1988 GSXR1100(Only year they were made) . The rear is 18x4.5" and the front is 18x2.75" (I think).

Since the 17" GSXR fit the 1100E rear, the 18" wheel is a snap. Front wheel adaptations have all the issues with brake/rotor compatibilities so complete front end swaps are advised. GS is different to 1st gen is different to 2nd gen.

I plan to put a 170/60-18 on the rear.

Dunlop Roadsmart Sport / Sport Touring Tires - Z-Rated - Rear

There are several 160/60-18 but the Dunlop seems to be about the only 170 18" sport tire. No quite as wide as the 180/55-17 but I will be happier with the added ground clearance.

I need to get caught up with posting since the top end (1168 and Terry's ported head) work and get these wheel/suspension on the ED

                Jim

If you're still looking for a grey color, you might try the Dupli-Color Cast Iron. Nice product that engine enamel. I've used it lots of times on my wheels, too. To save time masking, you can also just paint the entire wheel, and then before it dries, but while it's still tacky, carefully wipe off the shiney parts with a rag wrapped tightly around your index finger and dipped into laquer thinner. Works great. Fast, easy.

Meaning absoluted no offense to all of the "polish freeks", I did my wheels without any of that hard work, and they turned out just fine. I specifically did this because I wanted to see if someone without the resources or patience could pimp out their bike. So to Jwhelan65, and RenoBruce, and others, yes I admire your work. I'm pretty satisfied with my results too.

I used scotchbrite & simple green to remove all the old road grime & chain lube from the wheels. Then I masked & painted with rattle can enamel from the hardware store. I baked them in my wife's oven...that caused an interesting scene!

That's it folks. No muss, no fuss. And I think they look great on the bike, too! Even after 2 years, they're holding up to wear & tear.

So now you know there's hope for those of us with little patience to make your ride look spiffy!

                          Nice work Tom!!

Here in Texas no need for baking we just wheel the bike outside for a few hours in July and the baking is complete!

IMO the wheels look great! The safety wiring job is exceptional! Tasteful, complimentary and functional. Hmmmmm, now to decide what I want to do with my 1100G rims.

Just checked out your bike on your profile, VERY NICE! I really like the red, I would luv to find a 700e in red and mod it out with a fat tire! I actually picked mine up on craigslist for $400.00 (8600 miles on it).

                                Yours looks fantastic!! Great Job!!!
