It does have a 78 tank, but without the airbox (black) and carbs (choke lever on the side) I can't tell. Wasn't the GS1000E side badge a 78 item?Last edited by Big T; 04-13-2009, 11:46 AM.1978 GS 1000 (since new)

I'm really glad to hear you're planning a restoration rather than a parts sale. These machines have a lot of life designed into them.

I do have a 78 skunk but it was in front of the 79. I have the title for the burgandy one with the black tank it says 1979. The 78 i rebuild two years ago when i was 16 it was a christmas gift from my dad it came in three baskets and two trucks

What does the "Mfg. on" date on the steering head plate say?
A great collection you have there, Anthony.2@ \'78 GS1000

I saw the title and just had to link this

But I will tell you this, the BLACK engine is WAY faster than the silver engine.
Seriously you take two of the exactly same bike one with the BLACK 16V and another with the silver 16V, no contest, the BLACK 16V will waste the silver engine bike.

It is already on the bike. It is close but not touching. The bike is strutted and it also has 8in over extensions welded and we shimmed the sprocket out 5/8 of a inch maybe that has something to do with it, also there is no play in the chain what so ever. my dads friend charley sobiech who worked for c&w in Florida did not believe it either until he saw it in person. the side of the frame had to have a little touch up with the grinder but that is it when I get a chance I will send you a pick
anthony
p.s. charley said I was going to have to shift as soon as I let the cluch out. what do you think ? he also said the proper gear for the bike should be a 3.0Last edited by Guest; 04-14-2009, 11:41 PM.
