My GS1000 30'th Anniversary Paint Job

Just about wrapping up my GS paint job . . . but before I start I would like to acknowldege all the assistance, advice & help I received from various GSer's along the way. So in no particular order I would like to thank nvr2old, 8trackmind, Nessism, Rudy, Sharpy, Ghostgs1, KiwiGS & 1978GS1000Custom for all the quick e-mail replies, photos & pdf's that greatly helped me along the way

I still have another sand & clear session with the gas tank but these following pics give you an idea of what it will look like.

I have not buffed anything yet not sure if I should?

Most GSer's probably won't like my choice of colors but I have always liked those bright blues and I thought the silver two tone would provide a nice contrast, If nothing else it will be unique.

The striping scheme is based on the Aussie GS1000S but I didn't care for the fat stripe up the center of the gas tank so I modified it a bit. I also didn't want the stripe on the side to cut right throught the Suzuki tank emblem so I lowered the slope . . . Who knows if it will line up with the fairing?



The gas tank has given me a lot of problems because the air compressor I have been using has been shooting contaminates all the while. This with a air/oil separator and inline filter




The fisheye problems next to the left stripes are getting better each time. Camera resolution stinks!!!

Looks great. I would just put it on; you can always buff it out later if you want it to look like glass. After all the work to get to this stage you should enjoy it. I never buffed mine.

The side covers were the easiest pieces to do . . . in fact I have two complete sets. I stripped the original set of side covers with paint stripper and screwed them up mightly. I had the time, being unemployed to sand them down starting with grit #80 and workin up from there. This first photo is one of the botched ones.



This second one I purchased from carolina cycle. They both came out okay. My stripes are little ratty
. . . another Oh well



Here is my boat tail. I removed the toolbox and painted both sides blue. I gotta find a pop riveter
@ Harbor Salvage to install it.

Thanks Pos, I was thinking the same thing. This project has taken too way too long but the end is in site. May be I will get it buttoned up this weekend.

i was thinking , pearl blue (hok),and almond pearl,or a off white pearl , wet pearl look, not dry,
id have to chk out house of kolor or have it made, i love those color combos, kinda like the gsxr colors

As for buffing, you don't need to unless you want a glass smooth surface. (Actually sanding and then buffing). I didn't buff out the GS750ES because the final finish was actually better than stock showroom condition. The clear layed down very nice. Now, if you want a show quality finish then you'll need to buff.

Another point about buffing. If you do it you'll need another set of hands if they are off the bike. Pitch one of those side covers against the wall and you'll be pretty p*ssed off.

I read Jon Kosmoski's Kustom Painting Secrets so I know HOK because the book read like an advertisement for his stuff. I just used off the shelf GM colors for this project. The blue is GM Medium Quasar Blue WA9544 (late 80's Camaro's) and the silver is 2009 GM Switchblade Silver WA 636R. I don't know where GM come up with these names but perhaps that explains their current state of affairs
