    finishing the 750L restoration

    My project is finally going back together. the shop I'm restoring it in gave me a week deadline so I've been burning the midnight oil getting everything together.

    Two tone engine paint with polished engine covers.

    Engine laying on its side, ready to receive the frame. This would have been much easier if I removed the stuck tach cable (Also it's important to wrap all the frame bars that will contact the motor/table-I got some nicks on mine I'll have to touch up)



    This is how far I've gotten after four days, a lot of work since I tore the bike down over a year ago and things don't like to piece back together after that period of time. POR chassis black paint came out great on the individual parts, not that good on the frame. I was showing fatigue after 10 hours of painting when I started the frame, it came out okay.

    jeez. if i had a week i wouldn't be able to do it.

    But if you've made that much progress in 4 days then you just might do it!

      Deadline!? Whose shop are you working in, Paul Teutuls?
      Its coming along nice. Cant wait to see it done in a week.

        You have saddled yourself with a big mission for such a short period, but look to be on top of it.

        You will be able to rightly feel well pleased with yourself when you get done.

        Re the frame paint, I have gotten very good results doing touch ups by hand with small pieces of clean flannel (fluffy winter cotton) sheets.

        Spray the paint into a small pot then dip part of the little rags into the paint then rub over the dulled area leaving more of a stain than a paint layer. Repeat a couple of times as required allowing drying between coats.

        Don't go backward and forwards, the less rubbing the better especially as the thin coating starts to tack quickly and then drags. If the paint starts dragging you may as well have used a broom to put the paint on (Wipe it off quickly and start again) The rag should be moist with paint but not saturated. Smaller bits of rag can be used on the ends of Popsicle sticks to get into tight spaces.

          I'm at school and they need the space for student projects (why not mine?!). It won't be totally complete by the time I roll it out-still need to paint the tank and sidecovers, fab a tail end, fit my rearsets, then there's the exhaust, pods, and rejetting... a lot of work to do

          here's what it looked like when I first got it for a comparison:


          I hope to get some of the body parts I sandblasted bare on like the headlight bucket-I know I should spray extend on the inside, but what about using spray can clear coat for the outside?

            those are some monster high handlebars, maybe their stock and the angle is just odd, but they almost look like something you would see on a harley

              I don't think your L model had handlebars like them, but those bars were stock. After a 20 minute ride first time out on it, my wrists were burning. I'm replacing them with drag bars/bar risers, maybe superbike bars if those don't work.

                so far:

                one of the technicians was impressed and told me I could keep working on it at the machine shop. Looks like I bought myself some time, but he warned me that the freshmen would be in that area for their engineering projects... the type that don't know how to use a screwdriver and like to steal shiny objects. Naturally I need to move my bike out ASAP!

                  I moved the bike out to my fraternity house, still waiting for some parts to ship...



                  about 60% complete. Fitting the rearsets soon, lots of work ahead.
