Rear Set Mounting Plate Design

Bad Kaw
Oh, and on the subject of 'passenger pegs' here is a solution that I came up with on one of my ... er ... "green" bikes . Not meaning to thread jack but here is what I did. Cut a piece of metal plate for passenger-peg bracket mounting, drilled and threaded the holes, welded it in place, painted, mounted the pegs and *poof*!Last edited by Guest; 01-01-2010, 01:53 PM.

Bad Kaw
And all painted and bolted up it turned out like this.

...end of thread-jack, with appologies.
PS> Sorry I don't know how to make multiple photo posts!

Made some progress on the mounting plates. Everything is done except the two threaded holes in each plate that will except the helicoils for the rear sets. Should have those done next week. Only get a few minutes every few days at lunch to work on them.
Once the helicoils are installed just need to mount the rear sets and work on the return spring for the brake light switch. The 83 frame is going to allow for the rear sets to be tighter to the frame than I was able to do on the 82 frame. Don't mind those surface scratches they will polish right out. Still need to cut off the old shift shaft post (bottom pic).

Well my buddies done with my rear set mounting plates.
Here's the shift side with the 3/8"-24 heli-coil inserts installed. He applies a quick brushed finish in his shop which makes it easier and faster for me to polish up.
Somewhat fuzzy pic of pieces starting to be re-mounted to the 83 frame. Pit bull has been coming in handy. Some blue painters tape on the swingarm to protect it from the loose chain. New wiring harness laying in the background. That's the next big step.
Close up of dry fit of brake side rear set. All that left to do is find a shorter bolt for brake switch activator spring to attach to on the brake pedal. You can see the spring in the opening. The stainless plate facing to the rear with the bolt hanging off it holds the yosh header.
Cafe Kid, I'll post up the drawings for the mounting plates soon, trying to find a format like .pdf to have them print at actual size. I have them in autocad now.Last edited by isleoman; 02-10-2010, 10:29 PM.

Copy Right protected drawings. Free for anyone's personal use. Not free for commercial use, contact me if your going into business with these.
Applicable to 1983 GS1100 only. I think they are right, but no guarantee offered or implied.
The depth of the .75" recess for the three mounting bolts is .20". Those bolts are available from the company www.helmethead.com. The two rear set mounting holes are for ZX12r 01-05. You may be able to mount Rear Sets from some other bike, again no guarantees. Brake side shown, Shift side is a mirror image. Mine are made from 3/8" thick billet 6061 aluminum. Steel or titanium or another grade of aluminum might work as well.
Two Helicoils in each plate are 3/8"-24
I don't have the capability to make anymore of these so don't ask, Your machinist should be able to replicate. Mine were made on a Proto-track three access machine but a water jet might be able to cut the shape and most of the holes except the bolt recesses. Might also be able to make them with a hack saw, grinding wheel and hand drill if your serving a long prison sentence and need something to do. Good luck.Last edited by isleoman; 03-02-2010, 12:37 PM.

Thanks for the reply, do you think these plates will work with this set of aftermarket zx 12 rear sets?they are adjustable incase they feel to "racey"or not enough "racey"for me,I found these on fleabay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KAWASAKI-ZX12-ZX12R-ADJUSTABLE-REARSETS-REARSET-REAR_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3efd04c59eQQitemZ2 70532920734QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
They are almost as much as some ebay poops want for a set of stockers. Also do you have any pictures of the shifter side once complete?Wanna walk in the machine shop fully loaded. Thanks again

Sorry for delay I've been on travel for work this week.
Not sure how those units mount from looking at the photos. They may work since they say ready to mount but I can't be sure from looking at the photo.
Keep in mind that your gonna need a master cylinder and remote reservoir as well.
Did you see this listing?
His posting says he's parting whole bike. I didn't see the shift side listed but it might be worth contacting him. I'll have to look for the post I did before with the shift side details. I used a GS shift shaft and a Gen I FZ1 shift shaft linked together to get the right extended length.
They typically go fro between $50 to $80 per side for the stock ZX12R units. You can probably get a GSXR set to work as well but you would have to change the two rear set mounting bolt locations. I know the 00-05 ZX12R work with my dims. I agree that you should have your rear sets in hand before turning on machine shop.

Yes, I'm a copy cat.
I looked at at least 200 different stock rear sets on ebay and I couldn't find anything that looked as good as those ZX12R units. I found a guy that was selling both sides and the passenger pegs too. Got em for $109 + 20 shipping, and they just got here today.
I came back to this thread to try and figure out how isleoman got around the old shift lever shaft. It's right in the way of the linkage adjuster.

So here's my question: Why the change of heart with this one?
It would be easy enough to weld the post back on, but...
I think I'm going to make my plates out of steel. I'll just paint them black and that way I won't need to reinforce them with helicoils.
And yes, you're less than 1" higher, but about 3" back.
Thanks so much for the inspiration and the idea. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

Some day, if my wife ever wants a ride, I'll mount these matching rear pegs. OR, maybe some hot babe that's not my wife will want a ride...

isleoman's design is very nice. However access to cnc and lack of funds forced me to go on the cheap for my rearset plates.
1/4" aluminum plate using original footrest bracket mount holes for a locator.
91-92 gixxer 1100 rearsets.
Cut to shape desired...(used a jig saw) and threaded rod for the linkage.
