Paint or Powder Coat

Okay it's school holidays in Melbourne the next two weeks so I need to send my frame off to get sandblasted.

But what do I do next to I get it powdercoated or painted or what??

I'd be interested in some feedback.

I prefer paint . When you get your frame (and all the extra bits ) sandblasted , get them painted with a 2 pac paint (black--real bikes have black frames AND chains). Cheapest and lasts well . I got mine (frame and 40 odd pieces) done for under $300 . That was about 4 years ago and still have very little wear and stone chips etc .

I asked about powder coating but old mate said I'd have to cut little bits off the frame . Wire loom supports etc . Sorry , I want those . Plus , the bike wasn't a Charlie so he really didn't want to know .

What sort of bike are we talking here ? Pics will always get better responses.Sounds like a major overhaul on the books .



The powder freaks will be along any moment .

Hi Roy, Yeah Simons GS is in pretty good shape with the two-pack holding up well and thats with him riding the GS to The Island and back each year! Iam in the same boat with you on this one, do I drop a powder or go the two-pack? Powder is very tough but the two-pack can be made as a closer colour match to the original paint code, hhhmmmm what to do? Looks like I'll be watching your post to see what the others think of the powder or paint path. Catch ya later, cheers.

IMO I would go with powdercoating. Much more duarable application for a frame.

VMT makes a spray can self priming epoxy paint thats the cats azz..hard as nails and very very chip resistant.. good on frames, swing arms, calipers...can paint an entire bike for around 18.00.

Powdercoat.

A good powdercoater can match any color (and you don't have to cut off any wire loom supports or anything);



Modern powdercoat finishes are not only durable, they have a nice finish too;

Well seeing's everyone else is airing their opinion, I will too. The powdercoating on my Katana's frame is flaking off everywhere. When I get the frame sand-blasted back to bare metal, I'll simply be using black epoxy paint out of a spray-can. Will cost next-to-nothing, and if ever it needs to be touched up, it will be easy to fix.

And I agree with Simon, the only colour for a frame is black. Except, the orig. colour for Kats is silver, as pontiacstogo will attest (see photo above). But they should have been black! QED.

Powdercoat. Of course, it has to be done right.
I PC'd my '79 GS1000E 10 years ago and it still looks like the day they did it. Gloss black.

powder coating is the best option. as mentioned it is much more durable than any paint, even 2 pack.
tfb, if yours is flaking off then that is down to very bad prep, or a poor powder coater.
you do not need to remove any unnecessary bits but just make sure you are 110% happy with it before you have it done because it is very difficult after if you find you need to weld on another bracket or remove one for any reason, then touch it up again, like you can do with paint

its an on the shelf item at advanced auto parts...comes in different colors..not just black.

guess i made a minor mistake..I just got the can and it is vHt paint, not vMt.. anyways this is driectly from the can in my hand. SELF PRIMING...ALL WEATHER..RUST AND SALT RESISTANT..250degree ( 121 degree celcius) VHT epoxy paint made by a company called SPECIALTY PRODUCTS.. Their home page has a full description of the chemical resistency, curring time etc etc etc. i have spilled gas and laquer thinner on it and nothing happened

I used there clear on my calipers after painting them..fantastic stuff.

and were you satisfied with the finish when it dried?? I was thinking of doing some body parts with it too. I think it gives a great dry finish but i wonder if it could be rubbed out since its so danged hard once dried...HMM??? You know like you do regular auto paint!!!
