Removing the Windjammer - '80 GS1000G

I have had her for a little over a week and spent most of that time weighing the pros and cons of the windjammer she came with. I have decided to remove it and shelve it. I know I will need to find turn signals, but besides that what are the other tips and tricks I should be aware of before I start? Will I need a new headlight or will the integrated headlight from the Vetter fit? What damage can I do if I am not careful? It all looks simple enough but I wanted the advice of those who have gone before me down this path; I know you are many.

For those who might be interested, hold off on the pm's asking for the windjammer; I am going to save it in case I change my mind!

My fairing was removed when I got it, so I had to start from scratch. I think you'll need to know what's left under it before you can move forward. Things that may be missing are the stock headlight (don't know about using the one from the fairing), headlight mounting brackets, turn signals, and lower trim for the triple clamp. Hopefully the fairing wiring was plugged into the existing wiring, without anything being cut and spliced. Get it off of there and see what you have.

Cheap aftermarket parts can be found and made to work, but you get what you pay for IMHO. I'd recommend looking up OEM part numbers for what you need at someplace like PartShark, then use the reverse part number lookup at BikeBandit to find out what other models those parts were used on. Then you can shop Ebay (and here) for parts from all relevant models to get the stock parts you need.

Now that I think about it, I think I have a good pair of the round turn signals that were used on the '80 1000G. PM me if interested, and I'll get some pics. I liked the look of the rectangular ones better, so I mounted some from an '81 850 on my 1000.

I'm in a similar boat. I'd like to be able to swap back and forth - fairing and no fairing. I have aftermarket clampon brackets, turn signals, and an extra Vetter headlight.

What I don't have is a pigtail to go from the OEM wiring harness to the headlight.

Any ideas on where/how I can do that?

You might build one from bits from the auto parts store. I know they have the sockets, but I'm not sure about the male end (back of the headlight).

Help a noob out!

I have nearly completed the removal of the Windjammer. I have all the parts I need to go back to stock headlight and turn signals (a big thanks to Kochic!!) . I just have one problem - there is a cable which runs in the middle of the bracket which held up the 'jammer. This cable goes into the engine just above one of the middle exhaust outlets. The other end runs up into the cluster in the handlebars. I am guessing it is the ignition cable. I need to unattach and reattach one of the ends. I assume the one going into the engine would be easier, but I really don't know what the cable is or how it comes out. I am adding a picture. Please help a noob out!

Hi,
this is the rpm cable.You can remove it from top or bottom, pick the easier or the less dirty side. usually at the rpm in the gauge cluster.

The access will be much easier at the engine end, even though it is filthy. Do I just unscrew it and screw it back in - as simple as that?

I got it. The windjammer is off, the turn signals are wired and mounted, and tomorrow I will re-mount the headlight. I will be back on the road.
