Fuel tank repair question
uh...need help guys, got into an accident, most damage done was on the fuel tank, i had clip-ons on the bike. when i laid the bike, the clip-on dented the tank, about half an inch deep and about 2.5 inches round..did some searching, found that dent removal tool that pushes dents from the inside.. would i be able to use this tool with this size dent.. i also heard of pressurizing the tank with compressed air... any info is appreciatedLast edited by Guest; 05-17-2010, 08:44 AM.Tags: None

DON'T try the compressed air. It will spread the tank out so it will never fit right again. And it probably won't remove the dent anyway.
Whether you can push the dent out from the inside (and whether the tank will look better afterwards) is highly variable. You'll want to have an experienced sheet metal/body guy look at it. Tanks are made from thicker metal than car fenders, so some techniques are harder.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Greetings and Salutations!!
Hi Mr. se7en_modes,
After my crash I got lucky and found a great tank on ebay for a very reasonable bid price. I had to get the rust out and I ended up painting it even though it didn't really need it. Check the Parts for Sale and Parts Wanted sections here in the forum too. But I agree with seeing a professional if you want to try and repair your tank. That said, let me give you your "mega-welcome"...
I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
If there's anything you'd like to know about the Suzuki GS model bikes, and most others actually, you've come to the right place. There's a lot of knowledge and experience here in the community. Come on in and let me say "HOoooowwwDY!"....
Here is your very own magical, mystical, mythical, mind-expanding "mega-welcome". Please take notice of the "Top 10 Common Issues", the Carb Rebuild Series, and the Stator Papers. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...
Please click here for your mega-welcome, chock full of tips, suggestions, links to vendors, and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website where I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community. Don't forget, we like pictures! Not you, your bike!
Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed.
Thank you for your indulgence,

I just purchased one of these "Ding King" tools to see if I can't pull some dings and dents out of the the tank more before I start with body filler/glazing putty. Although I'm going to do a complete paint job, it might work on some dents without messing up the paint. I'm not sure if it can remove streched metal dents, and most likely not creased dents, but might be worth a try.

thanks for the "mega-welcome" and inputs, i tried some other product like ding king but it didnt work, dent too deep... i brought my tank to work and asked some of the fellow riders.. got some decent answers including "buy a brand new bike!" lol.. of course i said no... i kinda summed up all the ideas and here's what i came up with, since i didnt want to damage the kreem (i dont want to redo it), and go with the cheapest route; its kinda ghetto, i just went ahead and filled the dent up with body filler, and when i find a decent tank, ill reconsider.. it'll get me by for now

The correct way would be to have someone with a stud welder, weld some pins on the outside of the tank to enable it to be pulled out and worked by someone with body shop experience

my tank is 27n yrs old and is virtually rust free os i keep the darned thing full and oxygen has a hard time eating through a fog of gas vapour and liquid fuel.
