          Brasso

I used to use Brasso on my problem aluminum.

Heavy duty acidic degreasers shouldn't ever be used on raw alu parts. They will effectively etch the metal. Turning it black as you have found out. You may try sanding some layers off to get back to bare alu but it may be a lost cause. You should always test a degreaser on metals in an inconspicuous spot before going to town. We use a wonderful product at work on stainless called pit pirahna (sp) but it will flat ruin aluminium. Muriatic acid works wonders on certain surfaces too but it will stain steel. Even stainless. Ask me how I know.
