Suzuki paint isn't any better, leaking gas ruined my perfect original paint job on my 750.

Yeah, after all the prep work involved and the final wet sanding of the primer with #1500 grit I will only paint a gas tank with Dupont Imron or US Paint Awlgrip. Those two, you can pour gas, diesel, battery acid, brake fluid or about anything else you can think of all over the finish, and it will not do squat to it and neither will temperatures up to 300 deg.
The Awlgrip, unless you have a knife, you cant even scratch it. heheh

I ordered up a can of that stuff, got my tank off for a while. I painted it 2 years back "custom" and just threw normal rattle clear on it, got a few gas drops that I wiped off and left some stains.

Im not looking for perfect, but if I scrub it down then wet sand it with 2000 would that be fine for spraying the clear over? Also will it work on plastic side covers? Mine are a mess, sanding down the grayish chrome part and blacking them out. Might spray a stencil graphic on that if I cut something up too.

          Rattle can clearcoat

Rattle can clearcoat can not compare to HVLP (high volume/low pressure) spray gun. The particles are much finer and the spray pattern is MUCH more consistant. You can get a usable HVLP gun at Harbor Freight for about $15.00 see : http://www.harborfreight.com/20-oz-h...gun-47016.html

Borrow a compressor or buy one see: http://www.harborfreight.com/1-3-hp-...sor-97080.html

Put a filter on the gun. Prep, prep, prep... sand well with 400, then 600, then 1000. Wash your hands: Then go over with wax/grease remover.
Rattle can primer ok if you use light coats 20 min. apart and then fine wet sand with 1000grit.

Get a 4 to 1 clearcoat and hardener from auto parts store, same with the base coat.

Use a mask! And paint far away from all vehicles! 3 or 4 light coats of base 10-15 minutes apart (temp. 65-85 degrees with low-mid humidity best) Wait 20-30 minutes and mix up the clear and shoot two med. coats 6-10min. apart. Don't use tank for several days, and it will be soft for up to 30 days.

Here is a pic of before: http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/h...TankBefore.jpg

          and after: http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/h.../TankAfter.jpg

          Thanks for reading!

I've read really good things about this stuff:

SprayMax now offers a 2 part (2K) Urethane Aerosol Clear Coat. This 2k urethane Clear Coat spray has a much higher U.V. and weather resistance than any standard aerosol clearcoat on the market today.

Probably the best "rattle can" solution if you carefully follow the directions and use a consistant and slightly over-lapping pattern.

Two part urethane paint is better than the crap Suzuki used, which doesn't withstand gas too well either.

                  not true at all!
i spelled gas on my tank 8 hours after it was painted and it wiped right off.
but i didnt use no rattle can! i used 08 gto blue from DuPont and DuPont 1024e master tint for the clear. gave it the bass boat look in the sun...
if it was me i would re sand the hole tank and spay the base then wait 30 min and spray the clear. and no spray will over beat poly urethane paint.
sorry to hear that happen.. i'v been there with the dupla color pant that ready to spray. its junk!

Read the thread, the two part urethane comes in a spray can. It is not the Duplikrylon cheap stuff that we are talking about, it is serious paint...

hahah "perhaps if i type louder" that is f***ing funny as hell... im gonna have to get this tank painted right some day!! it gets better every attempt i try to paint it and i understand how the paint works and stuff it just sucks stripping it down to metal all the time...

mperryz24 that is an AWESOME paint job on that tank.. Massive amounts of jealousy is felt when i see your tank

i really need a good tip about this one question i have... Where do you guys spray and let your stuff cure? I sprayed outside on the side of my house and almost got away with it but 2 mosquitos landed on my clearcoating process and are now one with my tank!! Really the bugs are killing me so if i get a compressor gun i want to know where spray and also where you guys let your tank cure... does leaving it in the sun help it cure faster or does it really ruin the finish? thanks!!

                              spray

i spray in my friends old shop its dirty and nasty. spray the floor down to help with dust. and kick every one but you out the room. once i spray i let them tack up and move them in side the house to a ventilated room so no bugs get on them. any thing to keep them nice. and a run in the clear is not bad wet sand a re spray or buff.
