Does anyone have a favorite aftermarket volt meter? I'm looking for a small one that will either fit alongside the standard guage cluster or clamp onto the handlebar.

Here's a thread I started on the same subject. Some interesting discussion. I eventually settled on a Taiwanese stepper motor driven 270° 52mm gage that I haven't mounted yet. Other projects keep getting in the way of fabbing a bracket.

I've been looking for one also but the problem is that none are water resistant. I think I'm gonna just go ahead and get the Show Chrome Accessories Digital 5-Function Volt Meter, the one wisgolfer59 has the link for. I guess you could say I just got tired of looking so now I will buy and just be a little more attentive about washing and rain.

Trail Tech Vapor

I like Trail Tech's line, specifically the Vapor, which is water-resistant, has a good backlight and provides speed, odometer, tach, temp, trip odometer and a few other functions. It's a computer, so it can record ride times, highest speeds, temps, trip information, etc.. About 4" X 2" and weighs about 4 oz, is easy to install, and allows you to dispense with the mechanical tach and speedometer drives - a pretty good weight savings altogether.

It's designed for dirt bikes, but Trail Tech sells a "dashboard" mount with provision for common street bike warning lights and turn signal indicators.

I don't understand how these Vapor computers would fit our beloved GS's tacho and rpm cable ? or are these cables universal ?

Just saw this thread, was wondering too how this would fit an 80 GS750E as well. I've been having a hard time locating replacements for both my speedo and tach that isn't messed up.

The Vapor doesn't use any mechanical cabling. It wires to the bike's electrical system for its backlight and uses a magnetic sensor for the speedo, a sensor wire wrapped around a plug wire for the tach, and its own sensors for engine temp (different for air- and water-cooled engines).

The upside is that the whole thing is much lighter than the stock setup, and the speedo is accurate, whereas stock GS speedos are off by a 4-5 mph.

On my bike, I plugged the tach drive opening on the engine head with Suzuki's own part (from the late-model 1100 and others) and left the stock speedo drive in place, just without the cable. Check out the albums under my user id.

From the looks of it, the Speedo is run by a hall-effect switch mounted to a front fork tube. The tach is probably an electrically monitored deal that counts coil pulses.

I'm gathering that both mechanical systems get abandoned when using this unit.
