2k Spray Can Clear Coat Review!

Okay so i got this stuff from a guy on ebay its the "Rapid Curing" 2k Clear coat in a can, my old "duplicolor" or whatever autozone clear coat was absolutely destroyed by even the sight of gasoline from a mile away!
, first you shake it for like 5 minutes, take this red cap off the top then stick it on the bottom of the can where there is a little nipple and slam down on it to activate it (good for 24 hours once activated), i sanded off my old clear coat on my tank and prepped it before hand, the can has several warnings saying you Must use a respirator, the guy who sold it to me said the same, anyways its high chemical stuff!

once you start to spray it is amazing how it comes out like a big cloud of smoke! really good stuff guys! i got the surface tacky, then put about 3 coats of clear on the tank and the can was done... let it cure for about 24 hours (normal duplicolor clear coat takes about a full week) if you guys know me i cant stand it when my bike is down, woke up the next day and tested on the edges and the clear coat and it was hard!! no fingerprints/lines could be made only after sitting 24 hours! (i left it in the sun after 2pm for about 4 hours then left it in my garage probably a cool 75* the majority of the time..) i had to go fill up at the gas station and what do you know! no matter how hard i tried i still got 1 good drop of gas on the tank! i practically jumped/dropped everything and tried to wipe it off with my finger first then my shirt (people around me were like ) ... the thing rolled off like it was a glass table! didnt eat away AT ALL-i looked REALLY close and it did not eat away whatsoever the drop of gas sat for about 10 seconds too.. Guys i didnt even wet Sand + Buff/Wax yet and the gas did nothing!! only after about a day of curing too! im gonna wait till the end of the week to wax/buff, then it can only be better/more resistant
From now on im gonna get colored paint from autozone but i will NEVER use acrylic enamel clear coat EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am always going to use this rapid curing 2k clear coat! i swear by it! i also have a can of the the regular "non-rapid curing" 2k clear coat.. i would imagine it gets much harder and element resistant than the rapid curing can? i dont know i dont have years and years for things to "cure" in my book so you know what im buying again next time... This is for all you old school rattle can people/whoever without the air compressor and gun... this stuff is a miracle in a can! i would definitly use a respirator+ googles though when i took the respirator off the chemical and toxic smell was all over my shirt etc. and it smelled BAD, anyways thanks for reading i just thought i would share my good experience considering i have so many bad ones!

There was no problems at all mixing the two brands BUT the color paint by duplicolor was done about 2 months ago so i dont know how it would act if it was still wet etc.. the 2k clear coat might melt it away (i would take my chances but thats just me) im not sure but there was no problem with it mixing with my duplicolor.. i waited about 3 1/2 minutes inbetween coats in the sun though it feels like fall now in NY so i dont think the sun was that strong.. i would wait like a good 5-7 minutes inbewteen if your not doing it in the sun...i thank you all for posting the links! i paid 20 dollars a can + shipping 50 dollars total for 2 cans i only used 1 for my tank.. if i had used 2 cans(6 clear coats) i bet my tank would be seriously stunning!! it was just an experiment for me though ill use the other can before the season ends.. if you look at a good local/town specialized autoparts store (not autozone/ advanced auto or any of the big names) they might have the 2k clear coat in a can, i realized this after i saw the cans at my local "Colvin Autoparts" store..

its been 2 days since i put the clear coats on and it really seems hard as a rock! i think i could have sanded it yesterday honestly!! im still gonna wait a few more days so for now my tank looks like a big black orange peel i gotta say guys im finally really satisfied like i know i did a good job this time! i have a lot more pride in my bike now and i feel more confident displaying it around to people, i knew my GS750 was special all along but now people can really SEE especially in the sun where mistakes are usually shown.. this is comming from a guy who did his tank about 4 times, i had to strip it down to metal 3 times, NO FUN.. and to watch your tank get destroyed by a simple gas spill its very upsetting.. the tank is lookin sharp now! all black, i will post pictures after im done wetsanding buffing it out..

edit: i used the "spray max" brand that says "rapid curing" in a yellow star on the can, remember they have the same can but it doesnt say "rapid curing"... currently my other can i didnt use is the non-rapid curing i will use it later and see how it is.. scherring has posted the link as http://www.eastwood.com/spray-max-ra...t-aerosol.html thats the one i used

I think the 2k is the same stuff we tested over at Chopper Underground. Its a 2 part epoxy that was just great. Its what Im gonna do the tank and tins of the cafe I hope to start this winter.

I'd love some pics of end results. glad someone found something cool like this. I've been hunting for an easier way than buying the HVLP gun and clear, this is probably the way I'm goin.

That looks like the stuff I used, got some pictures on my latest rebuild thread in the projects forum.

It worked great, I just did a 1000 grit wet sand of the old clear on my 2 year old paint job and called it good. I got a few bubbles a few weeks later on one side but likely just wasnt cleaned / prepped good.

I did spill a ton of gas on it with my spare cans spout not working at all, and it took the spill like a champ. Soaked my spare gloves cleaning it up though... got to remember not to use them near a fire.

For my painting it wasnt ideal... I converted the bathroom to a temp spray booth. Used a regular mask and went in for 2 minutes a coat max. I left the ceiling fan on the entire time to vent it out, and put trash bags taped around the tub as my booth. The over spray did get out of that but it wasnt to bad... I rent.

ahh here are some pics to save you looking.

                      Stuff I used:

                      Spray booth:

                      Subjects:

The side covers where fresh plastic coat paint with vinyl graphics, maybe 1 day cure...

                      and tank:

Back on the bike, never did wet sand, buff, or wax... just wanted it to not bubble from gas.

Very interesting product. Thanks for the review. Its certainly easier than using the automotive 2 part and running it through your own gun but I wonder how it actually compares finish wise.

I was intrigued by the use of the bathroom tub as a spray booth but with my experience in shooting paint indoors I wouldn't try that. Despite lots of plastic sheeting and tape, I managed to shoot overspray everywhere in my basement workshop when clearcoating a frame a few years back. Half my tools ended up with a coat. I caught hell from the boss and can only imagine what would have happened if I'd have done it in the bathroom

A very valid point about safety. This ( and most other types of) paint can destroy your lungs. Don't ever attempt to spray with out a proper mask or even one of those paper masks. Better yet set up a spray booth in the garage or shed where there will be lots of ventilation. Spraying in the house can also be dangerous if its done in the basement where the furnace and or water heater may be located. Overspray can be very combustible and the pilot light from a furnace or waterheater can set it off.

Think safety ona nd off the bike folks.

                        cheers,
                        Spyug

yea, it worked well and did stay liquid in the can long enough to let the coats set and put 3-4 coats on before it went empty.

I packed the room up tight so nothing was out, and yea the mist might have spread but it did vent out eventually too. I had a towel under the door and the fan on for like 2 days before I went back in. I was gone anyways so when I got home it was all clear to enter.

I didnt want to spray it outside and have bugs all over it lol.
