How Do I Polish The Engine Covers?

I just picked an 82 GS450L for my wife. The PO stripped the clearcoat off the engine covers with something in an attempt to polish and recoat them, but all he did was strip the clearcoat and now they look like crap.

I have two choices 1) Buy different ones from eBay and just swap them out, or 2) finish what he started and polish them.

Buying new ones is the easy fix, but what is involved in polishing them if I choose to go that route? Should I attempt that myself so send them out to someone that knows what they're doing?

    Thanks

    Jim

Step 1) - Click Advanced Search at top of forum
    2) Type "polish" in the Keywords box
    3) Click "Search Titles Only" (just below Keyword box)
    4) Click Search Now button

The search results will find LOTS of different threads on how to polish your engine cases. This topic is quite common and gets posted regularly.

    Good luck.

To those of you that truly offer assitance, thank you. For those of you that offered but then turned against me, thank you too. For those of you that are just plain jerks.....

Even though I never asked, I got the info I needed. I'll change my ID and profile info, and keep browsing around for a while. That way, I'll know you but you won't know me and life will be sunshine and lollipops for all. Just like in Rambo, the innocent guy just passing through succumbs to his persecutors.

I'd like to leave all of you with just one last tip - contrary to popular belief, there IS life beyond GSR.

Earl, would you please do me a favor? Could you reach around behind your back, reach between your thighs, grab that little cow teet you call a *****, pull really really hard and then STICK IT IN YOUR ASS!!

And I'm also puzzled why you have posted so many questions here over the past few months when you evidently knew what to do back in July of '09, as indicated in this classic post to Rose:

No hate (at least on my part, maybe not so much on his), just the facts of what he did, and my expression of puzzlement over his actions in starting this thread, based upon his prior posts. I simply revealed to everyone what he did. What you or anyone else does with that information is not really of any concern to me.

Interesting that you're insinuating I'm the hateful one here, when the contrast between his comments and mine are quite stark.

Griffen, you and I haven't spoken in over a year. I thought we were done with this? Apparently you're the only one here that hasn't let this go.

Since then I've spoken with many of those same people, and on many many occasions even Josh, and they've all been very helpful - especially Josh (the man is GS genius!!). He also had no reason to like or help me, but through a series of conversations we've put those differences behind us - never uttered a word about it since. He's even complimented me on the resto work I've done to my bike. To me, that's VERY COOL!!

I inturn have been very polite and respectful of the people in this forum and have shared what little info I have learned while restoring my bike.

I don't know what I wrote in this post that has upset you so much, but whatever it is I'm truly sorry. If it's because I didn't go through previous posts to find my answer, well, I don't know what to say about that.

Yes, I said I was going to change my user name so I could start again in people's good graces. But after saying that, I received quite a few PMs encouraging me not to, so I didn't. As a result of not changing it, I still received plenty of help, and made a few friends along the way. Since then, no one has given me ANY crap about anything, until now.

You and I (and many others) got off on a bad foot - that's no secret, but I wish we hadn't; and that was last year. You and I have never met in person, but I would be safe to assume we're probably both pretty nice, fun loving guys that share the love of two wheels on the road, and have a lot of war stories to swap. What has been said, has been said, we can't take it back. But, what we can do is leave it at the side of the road and move on with our lives.

From one biker to another, despite what happened here last year, I would help you out if you ever needed it, in anyway shape or form, if I had the means to do it. I truly believe you'd do the same. You don't have to like me - I'm fine with that, but don't we have better places to focus our energy?

For some unknown reason you seemed to have copy/pasted some of my older posts - the bad ones. Can I encourage you to browse some of my other posts from the past year, and copy/paste the ones that show my respect and thanks for the help I've been given?

How about starting with the one where someone from Dayton was looking for an exhaust clamp so they could go on the rally earlier this spring (I believe it was your group of folks, but not quite certain). I happen to have one and I gave it to him free of charge and I paid for the shipping.

Or how about the one where I was willing to pick up a Vetter fairing from Vintage Bike Days at Mid-Ohio, at MY cost, for someone I had never met. I knew full well that if I spent the money and this wasn't what he wanted, I'd be eating that cost, but I offered anyway. He didn't know me from Adam, but becase of this forum he trusted me. Needless to say that never came to fruition (couldn't find a fairing), but that's beside the point.

In any case, I'm done with this conversation. If you'd like to cyber-handshake and put this to rest my hand is already outstretched, but if not then I don't know what else to do or say.

Let it go, please? Let it go.

Your welcome. I think the link has been down for a while. Some of his other posts indicated that he did work for some of the members here. Anyway, It's great info! IMHO if your going to spend the cash on a polishing setup, don't do the bench grinder setup. Spend the extra dough and buy a Baldor buffer around 3600 rpm. I got mine on fleabay about 5 years ago, it's just like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/3-4-HP-BALDOR-Bu...item53e167bdae

It does a great job, but gotta be careful about putting too much pressure on the work piece. Those motors don't bog down very easy, and 3600 rpm will burn the metal really fast!

I bought all my stuff through Caswell supply. I use my Dewalt 4.5 angle grinder to polish.

how do you maintain control with a hand grinder.
Its hard enough to use a motor with a wheel.

                            got any pics of this?
