Best Way to Prep Exhaust Pipes for Paint?

      Okay Okay you will draw me off the main subject...

      One I rent and I am from Florida this is the first time I have lived this far north.

      That is a furnace in the back ground the blue box is the actual furnace... runs off heating oil. The pipes are water running through the furnace to radiant heater placed in each room of the house. That is a 5 zone system, yes the little tank is an expansion tank. That is about the extent of my knowledge on this system.

      I is Floridian by birth Southern by the grace of God. There fore this crazy fangled heating stuff is foreign to me.

              LOL... I just looked at where you guys were from who were questioning this set up. Octain my little southern rebel, and 1980GS1000E the SoCal Reject.. (said with love of course). Honestly though that is a somewhat normal set up in this area. Lots of people use the furnace to heat the water and run it through the pipes to use as radiated heat. As far as sweating pipes never seen em sweat in the three years I have lived here. Southern Maine air stays a lot drier than down south. I know where you are coming from Octain I was in Kingsbay, Ga for ten years my grandparents live in Warner Robins, Ga. and I am from Florida. But it works. Just heating oil is SOOOO EXPENSIVE.... we won't even talk about those bills.

                Chiming in from northern VT! You probably already know this but radiant heating is the coveted method! Cold floors be gone!

                Back to topic:

                My chrome headers are in pretty good shape except the area on top of the curve going under the frame. It feels crusty and rusty. I don't want to go to the trouble of trying to refinish the chrome but what should I do about that one area? My first thought was to wirewheel it then prime and paint with VHT paint, either black or silver.

                  I was thinking the same thing originally till i took mine off and realized how bad the rest were. If that is the only area you have I would probably wire down all four to a defined line and then silver VHT that area so it is a uniform look straight across.

                  Off Topic:

                  May try to ride out to Vermont this summer. Maybe you could guide me through some of the scenery VT has to offer. I am sure there are others from the area that would not mind the ride.

                    I have a 4-1 pipe so everything's visible except for that area I mentioned. Hopefully the crust isn't worse than I think. There's enough loose stuff so that if I idle long enough a nasty smoke starts to eminate, and it doesn't smell like oil, gas, grease, or plastic, but it it has kind of a hot dusty odor, not quite like that of a mouse nest, but close. I think it's the crap on the pipe beginning to vaporize.

                    Off topic:

                    There's lots of good routes in VT, but getting here from York will be just as fun. Quick route: head to Rochester, NH/Concord/White River Jct
                    Scenic Route: head North from Rochester, NH on Rt 16 (Spaulding tpk) to Conway, then East on 302 to VT. That's for starters, prolly better start a thread in the proper section to further talk about it.
