    Risers or new Bars

ok so i was riding my gs850g today and was thinking of trying to get a more comfortable ride..

A friend of mine hates this bike. he says its too "middle of the road. the bars ether needs to come back or go forward, and the same for the foot pegs & controls."

well i don't completely agree or disagree with him. the controls dont bother me its being hunched over ever so slightly. im only 5'10" i think the bars could come back 2"-3" max and i would be happy.

Would it be easier to throw a new set of bars, or track down a riser that would fit?

Is it your bike or his bike? Does it really matter whether he hates it if it's your bike and you are the one that rides it?

How much have you ridden the bike at speed? The stock bars are not too bad without a windshield.
If you sit more vertical, as with with set-back bars, you will be hanging on against wind pressure any time you ride faster than town traffic.

On the other hand, if you ride behind a windshield, the stock bars lean you too far forward, because the wind is no longer helping to hold you up.

Depending on where you get your bars, they might be $20-40.
If you look in the right places, you can find risers for about the same money.

Sounds like your friend is more worried about how the bike looks vs. how it works.

I forgot to mention, my #1 son is "only" about 5' 10", too. He is currently riding his brother's 850 and is very comfortable on it.

You can see that bike by clicking on the link for #2 son's bike in my sig.

Don't forget that when you raise your bars, your cables, and brake hose me become to short, especially at 3"s. So your once $20-50 rise will now cost you an extra $200. $140 for the clutch, and two throttles from Motion Pro, and about $60 for a single custom line from Galfer.

Dude, you need to learn where to shop.

Looking at OEM parts, not Motion Pro:

The SINGLE throttle cable is 15.68
              The clutch cable is 18.35

Not sure why you would need a custom line from Galfer for the risers I linked to, a simple re-routing of the stock line works well.
              (I have 3" bar-backs on my wife's bike, and that's what's on there.)

Total cost for new cables: 34.03.

              (prices are from G&S Suzuki)

ya i have a shield but took it off temperately while working on getting it ride-able. i like to lean back and relax when i ride. just sit back and enjoy. as if i were riding a lazyboy or a couch. and ya i figured with a 2" ish rise i can still use stock cables and such... im not putting apes on the thing like that one funny pic thats floating around here... i cant ride like im stretched on a wrack

They also make a set of risers that move the bars back, I have a set that came on a 750 I bought. lifts them up an inch and back 1.5 inches bolt in where your bars bolt down and use existing bars

That's right, just remove the four bolts that hold the handlebars, remove the two clamps. Put the new, longer bolts through the caps, slide the caps over the handlebars, slide the risers into place, then set it all in place and bolt it down. Re-arrange the cables and wiring as necessary, go for a test ride to make sure the angle is right, and you are DONE.

Through Motion Pro the OEM clutch is $15 and throttles are $13 each. When you get CUSTOM lengths to keep things from binding then the prices go up.

The GS850/1000G was a very comfortable bike in its day, and still is. Many folks on this board do not like the stock bars, which sweep pretty far back. I do like them, and I have used them with and without fairings / windshields. Normally, I ride on back roads with low speed limits, and have now removed all the windjammers etc. I will say that over 70 to 75 mph, something a little more forward would be better unless you use a large type fairing. I rarely cruise over 70, and stockers are OK with me. Its a nicer view with your head up as well.

It doesn't sound like you have stock bars if you are hunched forward. What are you running now?
