    Another build

    Got my 80 GS850..

here it is as i got it...

after I cleaned the carbs and got it running...

now without the harley soft tail rear fender, made the front fender a little more sport, new bars, and got rid of the taz mural on the tank...

I have new pods that fit better for the carbs and getting ready to do all of the wiring on the back end. I have to finish the tach, and speedo cleaning as well as clean the bike and refresh the paint....

lots to do still but make it run good then paint it...

    Good looking bike.

She is running a tad lean, though.

I think it's the fact that you pipes are blue all the way back to the collector.

Though the single walled chromed Kerker will tend to show a little dark brown to light blue, when you see purple, you are getting close to the melting point of aluminium, which your pistons are made from.

NOT to worry!!!!!!! I would pull the carbs and see what you are running for jets and where the needles are set. Since it has pods and a 4-1 exhaust, you are looking for jet numbers like these: http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=4035 Pay attenion to the stage #3...

Thanks for the info.. I thought the pipes turned color due to heat.. although some of this it sounds is a little bit ok? correct?

This is great info. what do i need to look for when i pull down the carbs again..

I take it that Lean = Rich ( too much fuel? )

Where are the jets? Do you have a diagram?

            Thanks again.

No, lean = not enough fuel.
Jets (main & pilot), are in the float bowl.

There is an excellent factory manual on Cliff's site you can download. It has the '79 carbs and yours too.

ok... so I lost the #2 carb pod... replaced it... and now the pipes are turning a little browner... is that good or bad?

                    Bad

You're about to melt the motor

                    The above comments are sarcastic

Your pipes should have a couple of inches of blue, tops

3' of blue means it's overheating badly

I recommend not riding it until you correct the jetting

What do your spark plugs look like?
