lowering gs1000/cutting shocks
anybody ever cut their shocks down to lower a gs1000 looked for some lowering kits but no real luck, or a reasonable place to pick up some 11/11.5 shocksTags: None

You have to be careful with shorter shocks because the rear tire may crash into the inner fender. It might be easier and safer to shave the seat if you want to lower the reach to the ground.Ed
To measure is to know.

Hi,
From a website link in your "mega-welcome": http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Sus....html#Lowering
You can buy shorter shocks just about anywhere. See the vendor list in your "mega-welcome". Just make sure they are the same "eye to eye" or "eye to clevis" configuration, whichever your bike uses. Move the fork tubes up in the triple clamps, shave down the seat, then be really careful of scraping things when going around corners. Make sure you lower the front and back about the same distance so you don't mess up the handling too much.
Thank you for your indulgence,

You can cut both but not the same length. If youre lowering the overall 1" then you can only cut about 1/2" to 3/4" due to the amount of spring load you'll lose. The best way to cut the coil is with a cold cut saw. Any spring shop will have one as well some metal fabrication shops. Call around. To cut the shock rod, any method short of flame will be fine. Id thread down to the proper point before the cut though. It will make it easier. The other option for the coil is to take the shock to a spring shop, tell them what youre doing and they can cut a coil to length thats the proper spring load for your weight and such. You could cut the coil yourself if you have an abrasive metal saw. Just fine the thinnest kerf cut off blade you can find. And metal supply company will be able to help. Ive cut coils for work trucks and its not that big of a deal. And as far as losing any of its temper, until the metal glows, your good. Just make the cut with fast steady pressure. And clean up the cut end with a light touch with a grinder or file.

Just remember if you lower the rear you must lower the front or your entire geometry will be off greatly affecting handling. Im lowering the rear of my bike 3 in the rear and 2 in the front. Im going to liwer my rear using hardtail struts. I will be lowering the front by dropping the trees. But im also going extremely low. Honda Rebel shocks are easy to get cheap and only 10.5 inches tall. The ride isnt to bad
Of course anything awesome like Ohlins or Works can be made to your specs for the small some of your first born son
