what primer, if any, for painting engine

I bead blasted my covers with glass, they came out very nice. I've got some PJ1 gloss black engine paint for the top coat. It claims to be an epoxy. Do I need to prime them first? Reno Bruce mentioned etch prime on at least carbs, but the Rustoleum brand I saw said good to 200F. I don't think that's high enough for an engine.

Duplicolor's etch prime doesn't say, or was 150, I don't remember. They also have an enamal engine primer good too 500 F and I have read that PPG's DP40 epoxy can be covered with aryclic enamal, but that's the reverse of and different products.

Like find out if others primed or just used a black or silver top coat.

I just went straight on with the PJ1 rattle can. No primer. Just need a good clean, slightly abraded surface. It will cure onto the cases after a good heat cycle. JUST DON'T TOUCH IT when it is hot or you will smear it or mark the paint. It has to fully cool to cure.

Don't think there is really a primer for high temp application in conjunction with the PJ1. I did look around and ti seemed like the PJ1 rattle can is a stand alone product.

I'm pretty satisfied with the durability of the finish. Once cured it withstands gas and dings with a wrench well.

I did not bead blast. I used power washer, wire brushes, sandpaper, and ALOT of elbow grease. The aluminum will be thirsty though, so you will want to do a few coats.

Parts/pieces that are not going to be getting very hot will need to be heat cured in an oven or the like, ie my carb bowls, rails and slide covers, or the paint will not be very durable.
