I'm putting drag bars on my '82 GL - what cables to go with?
I've heard that Katana cables (clutch, brake, choke) work well in this application (and I need new cables anyhow) but what year should I look into? Where to get these as well? Z1 doesn't seem to really carry these.Tags: None

katana choke goes to it's LH side panel.... presume you're on about the original katana here and not the later "wannabe"
my kat clutch cable has a metal tube built into it on a curcve out of the lever to force a route it wants to take so that may not be the best option imo....

Thanks!
No one has any further input on this? I'm going to be buying all this stuff very soon and I want to make sure to do it right.

Pretty much if you wanna do it the "right" way mount your bars and run a string how you want your cqbles. Thats your length. Take your stock cables qnd your bits of string to a dealership or order them from motionpro. Kat throttle will work. Dont kniw about the clutch tho.
When i fit my superbike bars i just rerouted my cables and it worked fine.

Careful with the dragbars, Ive put a set on my 550L and my resevour set right up gainst my tach. Im thinking superbars would have been better.

You should be able to reroute your cables.
I got bars with a 2" rise and 4" pull.
I had to adjust the Adjuster Nuts on the Throttle cable and Clutch.
Because if you DONT, your RPMs are going to Jump when you turn your bars left or right.
I found this out the hard way.
The brake cable also forms a tight bend a few inches below the resevior.
(just from the excessive slack of having a lower bar.)Last edited by Guest; 05-12-2011, 03:52 PM.

The brake cable also pinches a little bit.....sort of a tight bend.
I guess I'll try it without new cables first and see how it goes.

The 650 M (Katana) cables should work for the clutch and throttle for superbike, drag or lower bars
Go with e model cables if your bars are higher1978 GS 1000 (since new)
1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
1978 GS 1000 (parts)
1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
2007 DRz 400S
1999 ATK 490ES
1994 DR 350SES

does anyone have part numbers for these cables? i just put drag bars on my 81 750L, and while i managed to re-route the throttle, I can't get the clutch to go. plus, the cables are original, so i'd rather just replace them.
I've searched several sites, and can't find what I need. I think I've found the throttle, but no luck on the clutch.

I just put Low European bars on my 850GL. Used the original GL cable for my clutch, but disconnected it at both ends, re-routed the cable, and it works fine. You will have to use the adjuster down low, but it should work -- after re-routing. Did the same thing on the original throttle cable and it works fine as well.
