Wide 17" spoked wheels on a Katana 1100 .

Those look great! What size rear tire is going on?

Tire sizes are going to be 120/70/17 up front and 180/55/17 in the back.



A stock front wheel versus the new 17" wheel being fitted.



Wheel fitted in the front but something doesn't look right. :roll:



Front fender is waaaaay too high so I use my air hose taped to the tire as a spacer to take measurements for the new bolt holes.



Front fender test fitted with spacer in place, lined up straight and level on all sides, then mark.
Drill new 8.5 mm holes for the bolts.
My fender needed to be lowered about 65 mm.



Final fit of the front fender, looking better then it first did.
The old holes will be filled in and the fender painted, this is my spare front fender so I can keep the other one stock.

The brace on the inside of the fender has got to come out as well as the brackets for the brake lines going to the anti-dive units, already disconnected on my bike.

Inner diameter of the fender is 130mm, tire is 120 mm wide, even the lower heads of the stock fenderbolts help in this case

So that is the front tire more or less sorted, can't wait to get my rear fitted, the inner tube is on special order because it's for a 180 tire.

Hey Rob,

I'm not a fan of spokes but they look really good man....and I like the lowering of the fender. The front end looks lowered now and the fender gives it a slammed feel.

I like spokes but hate cleaning the alloy rims and spokes!

How is the steering etc on the bike, as the rake and trail must be quite different, not to mention the ride height?

I only took a short ride since it's wet and there is salt on the roads but it feels good! Front end turns in faster yet it doesn't feel twitchy but I will test more thoroughly when the roads are dry, the forks are also lowered about 3/4" in the yokes too but I already had it that way with the old wheels for a quicker turn in.

Brand new tires need to be scrubbed in as well as new brake pads.

Saaz the front wheel is a little over 6 cm lower in total so 3 from the axle to the ground, old and new rear wheels are very close in height (but not in width :twisted: )

A little deeper info n the chain and sprockets.



Front sprocket is a 17 tooth 530 (Afam I believe) imported from Japan with a 13 millimeter offset.

Rear sprocket is a 46 tooth 530 Sunstar sprocket intended originally for a Bandit 1200

Chain is a gold DID X-ring 530 118 links long, this is longer then needed so I took a few links off.

The 17-46 gave me a ratio very close to stock.

The front sprocket came with a spacer which is put behind it so it's sits like a stock 630 sprocket would. The rear sprocket needs to be offset to keep the chain line straight.



I used washers with a 10 mm center hole to fit the M10 sprocket nuts and a 30 mm outer diameter to get as much area as possible, one side has t o be ground of a bit because it touches the hub. 5 washers gave me 12 mm thickness.



The bolts are 60 mm long and fouled with the swingarm and needed to be cut back about 10 mm, one side of the head needs to be grounded a bit off a bit to fit inside the hub, the nuts are selflocking. When my favorite bike shop opens up again I want to have a aluminium spacer made instead of the washers.

what and where


hi there looking at doing to one ove my Kats. what brand ove rims did you use ? what sizes ? and where did you get them from ? i have the hubs got the new old stock from an old shop clean out , have bean looking at excel rims but only go to 4.25X17 for the rear in the motard range and the harly ones that go larger have 40 spoke holes , as i wish to go at least 5 to 5.5x17 , as i had the bike set up on gsxr rims and is now finaly working good with a 170 rear , the front is not so much off an issue . I orgialy bought the katana with wire wheels on but sold them to fund me in to another Katana and now want them back again ,

I used Morad rims on my GS750 hubs, guy spoking the wheels uses them, don't know where to get the min Oz, 3,5 front and 5" rear, go for 5,5"!
It fits nicely and makes the 180 section tire look much fatter.
