Best Cleaning Practices

So I'd like give my bike a good detailing including polishing and or degreasing the motor and other metal parts. I've heard WD-40 and degreaser on many parts work well but I'm also afraid of using the wrong product on the wrong parts (i.e. brake discs). Does anyone have a good article or video tutorial out there that can help me out?
