how to repair a fairing
My 83 GS 750 ES has severe damage to the fairing and a dent in the gas tank. (the guy I bought it from dropped it while loading it on a truck) the fairing has a crack as well as a chunk broken off, any suggestions on products glue it back together and what to do about the dent would be appreciated.Tags: None

the plastics are ABS and can easily be repaired with "slurry". Take chips of ABS and add them to some some acetone. The plastic will melt and when mixed in to the acetone will form a glue. You should make it fairly thick.
When applied to the crack it will act like a glue and filler and as its the same plastic it will bond with the existing and become one with it. It can be sanded and painted.
If you make it up in a glass jam jar with a tight lid it will stay fairly liquid for a week or so. When it hardens you can add more acetone and it will liquify again. It can be sanded and shaped.
You can get ABS from plastic suppliers or even use something from the plumbing section of the local hardweare store.
With the dint in the tank you may be able to poke it out from inside using a piece of metal rod shaped like a "J" introduced through the filler neck. Alternatively, you might be able to get it out with one of the suction cup dent pullers available from the local autoparts or auto bodywork stores.
Good luck with it and show us what you can do.
Cheers,
Spyug

thanks spyug, and yeah, I would have forgotten to take "before"pictures, so thanks for the reminder to document my progress too.

Another option with the fairing is epoxy glue and glass cloth. Maybe use that acetone/ABS slurry first, and then back it up with a layer of glass and epoxy on the inside?Ed
To measure is to know.
