No I don't think so right now Tatu. But we'll see, I might end up changing my mind once I have the tires back on.Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

So here are the fork lowers now.
I didn't take it too far as the scratches in there are too deep to take out. I think I inadvertently put them there when I used my wire wheel to remove the old base sticker. Oh well. They look pretty good and I do see myself in them so we'll go from there.
I am considering getting a bench top grinder but it will be later on. Want to get this thing running first.
Btw Pete, I bought the denatured alcohol but it comes in a liquid can. Did you just let the wheels soak for a bit or actually scrub the stuff off?Last edited by cowboyup3371; 11-19-2011, 12:17 PM.Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

The use of denatured alcohol puzzles me. I used it before in other applications, but because of its nature, it's not used in my shop. I polish alot of aluminum (20-25 pieces a week) and have discoverd that mineral spirits is ideal for residue removal because it doesn't evaporate nearly as quickly. It allows one to wipe the part down without having to rush it.
To remove stickers and decals on aluminum, I use Permatex foaming gasket remover. It is applied (very carefully) and allowed to sit for approximately 15 minutes. I use plastic putty knives to scrape off the bubbled up stickers.Last edited by Guest; 11-19-2011, 04:48 PM.

Real nice Scott, well done!
I'm assuming the denatured alcohol will work the same as the metho, and basically I just get a rag with some soaked into it and give it a good rub down between compounds.
If your oxide is caked on, you possibly may need to soak a bit I guess, haven't had that before so I'm not sure on that one...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie
