    GS650 seat pans...confusion about designs 1981-1983

The seat pan on my 650GD is in decent shape and is only missing one of the rubber cushions that has been replaced by some rubber tubing. I have some new cushions on the way, but I recently saw a photo of a seat pan that had a bar spanning the midpoint of the seat. EDIT-My seat does not have this bar.

This doesn't look like a stock seat to me, but I haven't seen enough to make that call.

That got me to wondering if different designs were used in the model years 1981-83.

The reason I ask is that my seat doesn't ever feel "locked in", and I get a lot of side to side movement, and a bit front to back as well. I'm hoping replacing the one missing cushion will help but I wonder if I'm missing a part that is supposed to lock into the frame?

I have yet to find a parts fiche that shows the underside of the saddle...

That is not a G seat, they are quite straight and flat. I have a 650G seat up in the attic if you need a pic of it. I think that is a Yamaha 650 Maxim seat advertised.

Here is the fiche for the 650 maxim seat: http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmot...8214#sch225908

Those cushions are important for the "locked in" feeling. Also, there are some shims back at the lock assembly to help set the proper height for locking.

Nice pickup on identifying that seat. That little bit of info eases my mind greatly, and I can now settle in to getting my seat to fit properly.

I thought it looked a little wide through the middle for a GS. Interesting point about the shims...I don't see anything on the parts diagram that looks like a shim. Do they fit under the lock assembly or does it shim on the rear cowling somehow?

Thanks for offering to take a pic. That would probably give me a better guideline for troubleshooting the fit.
