Side cover advice
Okay here is the scoop. I am missing a Left side cover and the right one is in bad condition. Do I remove the stock airbox and replace with pod airfilters. Then I can mount the cdi, blinker, voltage regulator, starter relay etc under the seat and fabricate some side covers that get welded/bolted on. Or do I try to find side covers and go with that? I want the bike to look custom. How hard is it to rejet? I do have a bit of experience with jetting 2 strokes. Thanks guys!Tags: None

might check with cycle recycle II on 10th st. in Indy. He has a large number hanging from the store ceiling.

That's really up to you based on two things. How much of a purest you are and the condition of the bike. You already said you want it to look custom so...
If it were mine I'd gut that center section in a heart beat and have a see through frame. I'm not familiar with the carb set-up on the 450, but someone here can surely give you some jetting pointers if you do switch to pods. After that all you need is a little experience with a wrench and screw driver and a good reference to help you do the work yourself. Maybe this one: http://members.dslextreme.com/users/...ning_guide.pdf

If you're happy to take the time to rejet properly, nothing to say don't do it
Go right to the end of the jetting thread in my signature and you'll see what one of the other guys has done for pods and stock exhaust.
The thread also has the correct jets you need to get as Dynojet don't make a stage 3 kit for our bikes.
Also, make sure you get quality pods like Ape or K&N, cheapies will make your life hell with rejetting.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Maybe you can use the stock air box and replace the factory filterbox with one large pod. K&N websight has a HUGE selection of shapes and sizes with .pdf's on dimensions on every one...
This is not my bike, I went a similar route but used a Uni filter and kept the side covers. Here is the thread I started on the topic.

That could work. What about cutting the box in half right by where the screen is then attach a filter to that? That would give me the space I need.

Sorry, not really following, but that's probably because of a difference in your airbox and mine. I'm going to go check the fische drawings for a '81 GS450L and see. Mine was a two piece and the filter mounted right to where the filter box joined the airbox.

WOW... Was I ever off base, my appologes! Yours would be much tougher than mine was, on second thought, pods would be much simpler I think.

You will get various answers on that... it has been done successfully. But the airbox was factory tuned with a lot of R&D for your application.
