I used catalyzed paint in a spray can. My color dealer mixed the paint and the hardener in a spray can and I had to keep it in the fridge for maximun a month before I used it. The result is great. The quality of the paint is the same as on cars. Try a color dealer with speciality on car paint.
I've also purchase paint in this way. I was painting the engine tin on a VW and wanted the same color as the car. It was more expensive than buying paint from the hardware store, but it is excellent quality.

Oh, I could use it right away. The maximum storage time was 1 month (when put in the fridge). The cold prevented it from hardening in the can so you could use any cold space for storage (eg outdoor). When painting I was recomended a temperature of approx. 20 degrees Celsius.

Okay, that's what I needed to know. And any paint dealer can mix it like that for you? Seems like an avenue I'll have to investigate further. Thanks for the quick answer!!!

If your tank is as bad as you say and you can't locate another one, here is a link to a company that does a really good job of restoring old tanks to like new. http://www.gas-tank.com/bike.htm
